"An up-and-coming marathon!" (about: 2008)

This is a great marathon for first-timers. It is a flat, two-loop course, which offers lots of opportunity for spectator support. Plenty of fluid/high energy food stations with wonderful volunteers. The weather was overcast, with a little headwind on the boardwalk, but overall it made for ideal running. Running the first loop with the half-marathoners added some confusion, especially at the finish line, as full-marathoners had to bypass finish line to continue second loop. Overall a well organized event and lots of Boston qualifiers!! Highly recommend this marathon as an early spring race.

"Great race but poorly organized this year" (about: 2008)

This was my second time running the NJ marathon. Enjoyed the course - all flat, varied, and a nice 'home spirit' among the crowds who cheered us on. The oranges & soft pretzels near mile 10 were also a nice touch.

What I didn't like was that it seemed less organized than last year. I had been looking forward to spending time at the expo (shopping for running clothes, learning about upcoming races at other locations) and instead was disappointed by the crowded tent near the windy beach. I left shortly after getting my bib.

Also, last year there was breakfast at the start, but for this go around we were told different things by different volunteers, and were sent on a goose chase in search of bagels that didn't exist. Good food at the finish, though it would have been helpful to have the water distributed closer to the finish line instead of having to wait in line to get inside of the tent.

"Unique location for a well-run marathon" (about: 2008)

Amazing what a bunch of volunteers can do! This weekend event is accomplished solely by volunteers and serves over 8,000 runners quite well. This year they were handicapped by really tough weather the day before and the morning of, but they pulled it off anyway. Anyone running it should know that there's usually more bands (who can set up in the rain?) and usually the hotel is available instead of the Big Circus Tent. I say unique because this course runs by the ocean at both the start and the finish then through a number of different and interesting neighborhoods with their own type of support and friendly people. At the end, a runner can soothe tired legs and feet in the ocean since the start and finish are on the water, and then head into the massage tent after indulging in a big meal that's always generous and different than the year before. This year it was vegetable and pasta hot soup. The run is very convenient in that there's no bus needed.

"Really just a 1/2 Marathon they let you run twice" (about: 2008)

First, I have to say that the volunteers and fans at this marathon were great and you couldn't have asked for better weather. In actuality though, this is a 1/2 marathon. (6,000 1/2 runners and 2500 full) You quickly realize this at the start and it really gets hammered home at the half-way mark when everyone around you disappears.
I think they would do much better to start the 1/2 about 30 minutes earlier. I'd also like to see them improve their post race organization. They give you about 20 yards before you reach the de-chipping station and then that's it. The food and liquids were another 100 yards down the beach and the water was tough to find. (Back corner of the tent)

This was a great marathon. Kudos to the organizers!

My very minor gripes were: I wish there was some signs to point the way to the promenade where the expo was being held. That would be especially helpful for those not from the area. The second minor was the cramped expo tent. No elbow room at all.

Other than that... what a great race. The course was scenic, flat, and fast.

The support was definitely there from start to finish. Plenty of water stops and a few porta-potty stops if you had to hit the facilities.

The crowd was enthusiastic all along the route.

The finisher medals are beautiful and the hat they gave to half/full marathoners was a nice touch.

I would run this one again.

I was the 6-hour pacer for this race. I walked the whole way and my clock time was 5:59:29 (31 seconds too early). I had a pleasant day in the sun, and got to visit with many interesting people as I ran. What more could I ask for? I look forward to returning to the New Jersey Marathon for the 9th time in 2009, and I will continue to recommend this race to others.

I like this race. I ran the full marathon in 2007 too and certainly will do it again in the future.
I think NJRRC does a wonderful job and they are a joy to deal with; the expo is small and quaint but efficient and a breeze.
I have two 'negative' comments, but neither is a reason not to run a marathon. (1) The 2008 shirt is flat-out hideous; from the color to the logo it's just awful. And (2) This race really is more the Long Branch Half Marathon (and the accompanying NJ marathon as well). The two loop course makes it so, as does the fact that 2/3 of the runners do the half not the full. Thus, the crowd support tapered in the second loop, and the thrilled throng of people eagerly awaiting my finish was a little thin.
But, like I said, no reason not to run it in 2009, which I will (unless I qualify for Boston).

First Marathon
COURSE: 4  ORGANIZATION: 5  FANS: 4

Hi. This was my first marathon and could not have picked a better one. I was actually torn between the Long Island marathon (just a 45 minute druve from my house0 or this one, but I am sooooo glad I picked the run the NJ marathon instead.

The weather in the morning was damp, but warm with very little wind. A huuuge difference from Saturday where it was cold, windy and drizzly. The sun finally came out midway and just roasted by the end.

The course was flat, but a lot of turns. One area featured an u-shaped alleyway...a what the heck? moment. Some of the roads had a stretch of potholes, but overall it was nicely paved.

The best feature were the volunteers staffing the fluid stations. They were simply awesome. As were the cops, city workers and residents. Didn't mind the lack of bands because I usually run alone without music.

The race director and his team organization were also simply awesome. They had a lot of updates and everything went smoothly. One of the reasons picked the run NJ versus LI was the NJ website. The LI had so much info and updates that made me feel very comfortable about the organizing abilities and the experience of Art and his great team.

I would recommend this one for any first time marathoner for the flat course, great volunteers, suberb organization and great racer information.

Next up....Either WDW or A1A marathon in 2009.

This was my first race. I am 36 and decided to participate with Team in Training for the Long Branch Half. It will be an experience I never forget. The entire event was well organized and the spectators were great.... I never knew so many people knew my name (glad I wrote it on my shirt to help them!!!)))). Thank you.

This race is one of the best there is - great course, organization, spectators, volunteers, race staff. What else do you want? There was plenty of water and Gu on the course - the course was flat and there was plenty of water! Certainly one of my favorite races!
