"Awesome race, run by the best organizers around" (about: 2016)
6-10 previous marathons
| 2 Steamtown Marathons
COURSE: 4 ORGANIZATION: 5 FANS: 5 This race is small enough to be personal and well organized, but big enough to have enthusiastic support along the course. It is easy for spectators to access the course to see their runners at multiple points and at the finish. The start is beautiful indoor, clean, good bag check, ample and clean Porto-potties. It has the best of small town America- cheerleaders, school bands, friendly faces, and enthusiasm. The course is beautiful at the start and through the tow paths. The hills at the end feel tough:). Great food tent at the end!

"Awesome marathon!!!" (about: 2016)

COURSE: 5 ORGANIZATION: 5 FANS: 5 This was my 5th marathon and my 2nd time doing Steamtown. Everything about it was great! The funny emails that made me want to do it even more, the great information we got, the problems we heard about leading up to the expo that once we got there you forgot all he went through to make it great. The spectators are amazing and I love the course! And I even got a PR!!!

"I can't overstate how great this marathon is." (about: 2016)

| 1 Steamtown Marathon
COURSE: 5 ORGANIZATION: 5 FANS: 5 Everything about this race is fantastic. Hilarious, informative pre-race emails. A warm, dry high school to wait in before the start. An actual, honest-to-God cannon fired off at the beginning. A fast but challenging course through a beautiful part of the country. Great crowd support. Amazing volunteers. Fantastic finish line. Free massages after. The best post-race food I've ever seen. A super-fun post-race party in a beautiful hall. Steamtown has everything! I literally can't say enough good things about this amazing, amazing race. Why are you even still reading this? Register already.

"Steamtown was everything I hoped it would be." (about: 2016)

| 1 Steamtown Marathon
COURSE: 5 ORGANIZATION: 5 FANS: 5 This year's Steamtown Marathon was my first and it was everything I hoped it would be. I set a goal of finishing sub 4 hours and was uncertain if I could do it. So I joined the 4 hour pace group, and decided to try to keep up. Throughout the race, pacer 'Mike', was simply unbelieveable: he was encouraging the members of the pace group; giving us tips on the terrain; sharing motivational thoughts; etc. Mike made the race for me. With 3 miles to go, I had the stamina left to break away from the group and finish at 3:57! Not surprisingly, the rest of the race was magnificent as well, from start to finish, coordination from Asst. Race Director Cummings, provided everything a novice marathoner needed to know, what to do, and what not to do. The is a first class operation. The towns, organization, and spectators associated with Steamtown set a high bar for other marathons, in my opinion.

"Outstanding fall marathon in PA" (about: 2016)
1 previous marathon
COURSE: 5 ORGANIZATION: 5 FANS: 5 The race directors care very much about the event, the runners, and the local community. All pre-race information was well organized, complete, and hilariously funny. Those e-mails helped keep me motivated during training, and really helped with my pre-race jitters. The race benefits the children and residents of St. Joseph's Center, Scranton who have special needs. The spectators were awesome- they cheered the runners through every small town we ran through. After the bus ride to the start line, we were greeted by high school cheerleeders and allowed to wait inside the high school to keep warm before the race start. The race is deceptively easy at first during the downhill miles- I could easily carry a conversation at race pace. The accumulation of downhill miles really took its toll on me in the later miles. My 'A' goal was to BQ by at least 5 minutes, which I did, although I didn't make my time goal. Even though I held back in the early miles to try to negative split the second half, my pace slipped 30 seconds/mile from the first 18 mile segment, and I barely held on to finish. I trained on hills, mostly rollers, but these were nothing like the race which seemed to resemble a continuous descent from a small mountain over the first 18 miles followed by a few nasty uphills. The race results show that many runners had a difficult time with the final 8.2 miles, so if you are planning on running this race your quads will thank you later if you train on downhills similar to the course, and save some energy for the hills at the end. All things considered, I would definitely run this race again.

"GREAT EVENT IN EVERY WAY!" (about: 2016)

| 1 Steamtown Marathon
COURSE: 5 ORGANIZATION: 5 FANS: 5 I ran Steamtown on my 52 birthday! What an incredible race. Everything about the event was superb and way beyond my expectations. This was my 28th marathon and certainly ranks up near the top. There is nothing negative to say about the race (other than it is 26.2 miles). Everyone should put this on their bucket list. It is a gem.

"Wonderful Race" (about: 2016)
11-50 previous marathons
COURSE: 5 ORGANIZATION: 5 FANS: 5 What a wonderful marathon experience. This race is worthy of a flight or a lengthy drive in order to participate. It has the bonus of being a fast course but that does not take anything away from the amazing group of individuals who make this event so great. After running 26 miles its such a great feeling to see the finish chute. This does not disappoint as its a slight downhill with amazing crowds and a finish line that I can only compare to NY. Forget those overpriced marathons, this is one that all runners should do at least once. It will give you a new sense of what a marathon SHOULD be.

"Great course, great people, great race!" (about: 2016)
3 previous marathons
| 2 Steamtown Marathons
COURSE: 5 ORGANIZATION: 5 FANS: 5 This was my second time running Steamtown and it was wonderful! The course and surrounding scenery were beautiful, everything was well-marked and organized, and the weather was perfect. Also, Steamtown had pacers for the first time this year, which helped me set a new PR! Finally, the fun with this marathon begins way before the cannon blast at the starting line; the frequent pre-race emails are informative and very, VERY funny!
