"Awesome marathon" (about: 2006)

I have finished 55 marathons in various states and I can't stop raving about this one. The entire marathon was well organized. Despite the cold weather, the young male fans in particular showed their support by removing their shirts. The finish line was so impressive because they escorted me to the door leading to the food line. The food was excellent from the soup to the sandwiches. The volunteers were so helpful and never stopped being hospitable. I'd recommend this marathon to anyone thinking of traveling to Alabama.

From the online registration, ease of reserving a room at a convenient hotel, packet pick-up, proximity of host hotel to the start (and finish line) to the beautiful (and flat) course, the crowd that made up for its relatively small size with great enthusiasm (even calling out your name as printed on your bib) and the well organized finish area with TERRIFIC post-race recovery foods, I found this marathon to be the best overall, by far, of the three marathons and 16 half marathons I've run. Southern hospitality is alive and well in Huntsville and their running club REALLY knows how to host a marathon. Kudos to all involved in the planning and execution of this event!

This was my second year running the Rocket City Marathon and I was blown away again at the excellent organization of this race. EVERYTHING about this marathon is perfect. The expo, start, and finish line are all at the host hotel so marathon morning is stress-free. Even though it was cold (16 degrees), it wasn't a problem because the runners are allowed to stay in the host hotel lobby until 10 minutes before the start. There is no waiting outside in the freezing temperatures like other races I've done. The course is great! It isn't completely flat but it's far from hilly. It changes enough to keep your mind and body from getting bored. It is very well marked and volunteers were at all the turns directing the runners. Mile markers were very easy to spot and split times were given at EVERY mile! I absolutely loved the fact that they printed the runners' names on the race bib. The spectators can actually call you by name and that turned out to be a very good motivator in the last few miles. EVERY volunteer I saw in the last 3 miles called me out by name and told me I was doing a good job. That is a very special touch and something that the mega-marathons could never achieve. I was able to set a PR this year and easily qualify for BOSTON!!! I've told all my friends about this race and I know it will become more and more popular once people find out how great this race is. Good job, race directors!

"A wonderful experience" (about: 2006)

This was my first marathon and it exceeded my expectations. I entered after seeing the positive feedback posted. Now it is my turn. The marathon was very well organized. The volunteers were tremendous and the spectators were all so positive for all the runners. The encouragement from the spectators made it special. I really appreciate the attention given to me following the race, and the post-race food and refreshments were great. Overall, an unforgettable time - a week before my 40th birthday! Thanks to Hunstville and Fleet Feet for a superbly run event!

It was run under cool (cold), crisp skies. Very well organized and run. The crowds were small but vocal, and the police did a great job of keeping traffic at bay. The food available after the race was quite varied and good.

"I highly recommend it! A "must do"!!" (about: 2006)

Very well organized. A lot of nice touches - good pre-race pasta dinner with an entertaining speaker, nice finisher's hat was a bonus, great selection of food at the finish, hotel banquet center was a nice accommodation before and after the race, and the post-race dinner was a great experience that I recommend for all runners! The course is flat and fast, well marked with splits every mile and a nice scenic route. The organizers are wonderful people who are committed to putting on a first-class event and it looks like they've been successful for 30 years! This is a "must do"!

"Nice Course; Friendly Folks; Celebration was OK" (about: 2006)

4-5 previous marathons

I thought this race course was pretty nice, and hills were minimal for a boy from the MTNS of Eastern KY. There was water and Gatorade every mile with plenty of support at each stop. Fan support was lacking as it was a cold morning and not the only show in town.

People in the area were VERY friendly and helpful. We stayed at the Embassy Suites, which was across the street from the HOST HOTEL... WOW, what a great deal that turned out to be. Wonderful rooms and awesome staff.

Pre-race meal was good, room was small and cramped, and the post-race area was also small and cramped.

The only digital clocks they had on the race were at the 25 mile-mark and finish. All other mile markers had someone yelling out the times and I was just never comfortable with how well that might synch up with the final clock. Would have been nice to have a 10K and 20K official split times.

Overall the race was very good. I would definitely do it again.

Ran this one last week. Also ran it last year. Nice course and relatively flat. Lots of turns in the beginning, but then it straightens for most of the remainder. Race hotel is in a wonderful location. From the finish to the room in less than 5 minutes. Pre-race meal was good, and they had a good speaker.

Also enjoy the pre-race expo - great deals on running apparel. After-race food is great. Treated very nicely. Good fan support, especially the energetic students along the Grissom High School stretch. Last year they even had part of the school band out playing! Overall, a wonderful experience - plus I qualified for Boston for the first time!

The Huntsville Marathon is a great marathon. The course is flat, the organization is the best, and the spectators are terrific. They announce your name, number of marathons and hometown as you finish. At the finish there is someone to help you with your chip, drink and anything else you need. Good job, Huntsville! I'll be back again.
