"Flat, fast and well organized" (about: 2010)

I ran the 2010 race and finished with my second fastest time ever, fastest since tearing my Achilles in 1994. It's flat, fast and well organized. As others have commented, there was not a huge amount of fan support, but I generally do not hear or see a whole lot when I race. Temperatures were cool, in the low 40's, and there was a misting rain on and off throughout the race. The last seven miles turned into the wind, and it got pretty chilly. I had run in a singlet and gloves and was wishing I had a long sleeve technical shirt in that stretch. Otherwise, packet pick-up and shuttles from the hotel made things pretty easy on race day. There was a gym with flush toilets before the race and another set of flush toilets after the race in addition to the port-o-lets. Overall, a good event if you are looking for a fast course.

"I love this race. Flat and fast." (about: 2010)

I ran the 1/2 in 2010 and have run the whole five times. This is a great race if you don't need cheering. Excellent support, lovely course, and ending in the stadium is great.

"Decent Marathon" (about: 2010)

This was my 15th marathon. The course was nothing special. The event organizers were super nice, but overall, I was not that impressed with the race. The roads were not closed off at times so we had to deal with cars. Later, as I left the event, I saw cars driving right next to the people still on the course. It felt fast though. Also, I could have been imagining this, but it seemed to me that there was a distinct sulfur or trash smell during much of the run. The pacing team was great. Finish is in a stadium, which was nice, but no post-race massage and no vegetarian food.

"Good Smaller Marathon" (about: 2010)

This is the second time I have run this race. The weather was incredible for a marathon. The parking on race day is horrible. Adding the pace teams was nice.

This is a great end-of-year marathon to travel to because flight, hotel, and rental cars are quite cheap this time of year for Florida. Also, it has a flat course, so you will PR if you train well.

"Best of Both Worlds." (about: 2010)

11-50 previous marathons | 1 Jacksonville Marathon

This was my 17th maraton. I've run small club/store marathons (100-200 people) and large sponsored races (NYC, Boston, Chicago). This was the best of both worlds. Easy packet pick-up at good running store. Great shirt; OK finish medal. Good transportation system. Start had indoor waiting area. Flat course with turns. Miles marked. Lots of traffic control, volunteers, and water stops. Chip timing was perfect. Always people to run with (3:40 pace). Finish was in the start area. Everything was organized and executed well. Weather was near perfect for racing. If I could, I would return every year.

Great course, good organization, low stress for runners, and terrific soup after the race. The weather couldn't have been better for running.

"FLAT Course for PR's" (about: 2010)

11-50 previous marathons | 1 Jacksonville Marathon
COURSE: 5  ORGANIZATION: 5  FANS: 3

This cours is FLAT!!!!! It is set for for PR's and Boston qualifying times. If you need some hills to work other muscles, then avoid this course, as you could iron your dress shirts on this this course - it is that flat.

Pros
1. Easy sign-up and packet pick-up the day of the race.
2. I parked my car 150 feet from the gym for pick-up - allowed me to go to my car for a change of clothes less than 10 minutes from the start of the race.
3. Gym allows you to stay warm, stretch and socialize with fellow runners.
4. Great volunteers on the course on a cold day.
5. Hot soup at the finish line - made me feel much better within 15 minutes of the finish.
6. Real restrooms at the start.

Cons
1. Need a few more port-a-lets on the course.
2. Medal was a little plain - especially the ribbon.
3. Very few people on the course cheering - if you need fans, the small marathons are not your cup of tea. I love the excitement of the fans on the road but I do not expect fans at smaller marathons.

"Good for a PR or first marathon" (about: 2010)

6-10 previous marathons | 1 Jacksonville Marathon
COURSE: 4  ORGANIZATION: 4  FANS: 3

This was a good run, largely through residential areas - not much opportunity for folks to spectate, but many people sat outside their homes and cheered runners. If you need lots of cheering spectators, this one might not be for you. If you enjoy just getting out and running, it's great.

I didn't even notice the incline in what was said to be a hill. This is a FLAT course that would be great for a first marathon.

I'd do it again, but next time it will be for a PR!

"COLD Liquid Sunshine" (about: 2010)

Great course and great organization... as I expected. A race doesn't hang around this long without DOING IT RIGHT!! I have wanted to do this race for many years but my 50 states thing took me in other directions. Now I can WHOLEHEARTEDLY recommend this race to anyone looking for a FAST, well organized race. It was COLD (it keeps you running), it was FLAT (nice scenery in places), it had FANTASTIC VOLUNTEERS all along the course, the POLICE protection was OUTSTANDING, and there was THE MOST WONDERFUL HOT SOUP waiting at the finish line. They did run out of Mylar blankets, though; order more next year.

"Best Marathon Course I've Run Yet" (about: 2010)

4-5 previous marathons | 1 Jacksonville Marathon
COURSE: 5  ORGANIZATION: 3  FANS: 2

This is possibly the best course I've run. It's fast, scenic, small and flat; however, flat is not always easier than the momentum and variety offered by a few hills. The sparse spectators were quality cheerers, and it did get lonely. The pace leaders were fantastic; they kept giving positive advice and affirmation to get us in under our goal.

The only suggestion that I'd have is for more port-a-johns at the start. I waited in line 20 minutes before abandoning my spot, which had barely moved, and it wasn't until mile 10 that I found a vacant port-a-john.
