"More challenging than I expected" (about: 2004)

The spectators were awesome. The course was a good challenge and the weather was perfect for running a marathon.

I was confused on wave 1 and 2. Was the weight for the Athens 150 or 170? I know that 150 is usually the standard and 150 was printed on my receipt when I registered, but one of the volunteers stated that it was 170 (which sounds like a bit much for Athens).

For the most part I would definitely run this marathon again.

The 2004 TCM was my sister's and my first marathon and held true to all of the reading I had done about it. The course was beautiful, the spectators refreshing, motivating and wonderful for sharing their snacks and their turf! Those last 6 miles are tough with the rolling hills, but make the sight of the Cathedral all the more euphoric!

"A perfect day for a marathon on a perfect course." (about: 2004)

This was my fifth marathon and my second Twin Cities Marathon. The weather could not have been better. No wind, cool, low humidity.

This is a wonderful course. Mostly flat. A few hills but no real killers. Fans wall to wall almost the whole way.

It is run along parts of 4 urban lakes (Isles, Calhoun, Harriet & Nokomis), Minnehaha Parkway, Mississippi River Boulevard and finally 5 miles down the boulevard of Summit Avenue.

I did not hit 'The Wall' and ran my p.r.

This race is a must for marathoners.

"Good, but still a second tier marathon" (about: 2004)

The TCM is run on a beatiful course. However, the crowds are thin in many areas, the crowd control volunteers extremely unfriendly to those spectating/cheering, and it lacks the energy, excitement, and organization of it's counterparts in Chicago, New York, and Boston. A nice race if you can't get to one of those others or if you prefer a relaxed-Sunday-run-type atmosphere.

I ran the Chicago last fall and I think that this was by far a better course and spectators. I would run it again in a heartbeat.

"The best." (about: 2003)

Everything about this marathon is the best. I've run marathons for 20 years, and none come close to this -- the BEST organization, course, etc. They do all the little things that make the race great. If you run this one, the others will seem sorta flawed...

This is consistently the best marathon -- cheering spectators throughout the course (200,000 of them), A+ organization, beautiful course (lakes, neighborhoods), and the best finishing mile of any marathon (downhill to the beautiful state capital). This marathon will give you a new standard. The best!

TCM was my first and out of 33 marathons, my fastest...and still my favorite course...Hope every runner enjoys it as much as I do...

B. G. from Illinois (3/24/2004)
"Second only to Boston" (about: 2003)

4-5 previous marathons | 1 Twin Cities Marathon

Of the 5 marathons I've run, this was by far the most beautiful and second only to Boston for overall experience. I enjoyed the rolling hills much better than the flat courses I've run. We drove the course the day before, and I looked forward to seeing some of the sights again on race day.

The finish was spectacular...downhill, with the capital in the background. It was breathtaking. I think the last mile was my fastest...I felt rejuvenated by the scenery and the crowd support. I finished strong to a big PR!! I will return!

"Perfect mid-sized marathon!" (about: 2003)

COURSE: 5  ORGANIZATION: 4  FANS: 5

As this was my third marathon venue (the others being Richmond, VA & Austin, TX), I was very impressed with the course layout: beautiful lakes and manor homes to view along the way and a good mix of hills to really challenge you (mile markers 21 through 23 were tough!) The great weather only enhanced the experience. The race organizers did a great job. The expo and packet pickup were more than adequate, the use of the Metrodome beforehand was certainly appreciated, the starting gate was fine (since I got their early), the fencing being only an inconvenience to those that waited too long.

There were enthusiastic volunteers and sufficient supplies on the course and at the finish. I too especially liked the milling area after the finish with a lot of people just lounging on the grass in the sunshine! High marks for the finisher's long sleeve shirt and the only minor, minor complaint was the smallish medal and lack of a finisher's certificate. Spectator support was incredible and I can't remember too many areas along the course where it was void of people. Twin Cities truly rocks! Also, thanks Miss Minnesota for the picture and autograph at the finish. Great way to end a long race with a pretty smile! I'll definitely return.
