"A Great Small Marathon!" (about: 2003)

COURSE: 4  ORGANIZATION: 4  FANS: 3

I have run this race twice and loved it
both times. I enjoyed the new loop around the Taylor Park Lake this year.
The beach view is sporadic just like the 2 other 'beach marathons' I have run (Myrtle & Tybee). Let's face it, you aren't going to find unobstructed ocean views when a $$$ house can be put there! I enjoyed the 'hills' of the bridges/overpasses-it's nice to give your leg muscles a break from all the flat running. The Trail is enjoyable and would be even more so if some of the
residents would come out their back doors to cheer on the runners. Very supportive volunteers and police/sheriffs. Awesome downhill finish! Great email updates from Race
Director. A great marathon in a beautiful location!

"Wonderful Time for First Timer" (about: 2003)

COURSE: 5  ORGANIZATION: 5  FANS: 4

I very much enjoyed my first marathon and the course provided. I have read several negative comments about the marathon. While there were a few glitches and some room for improvement, I think that the weather was a major factor for a number of people and that clouded the overall experience. In a minor way, the weather was to my advantage. Being a native Floridian, I may have handled the heat better than many. While I am sure my time suffered due to the heat (I guess just finishing the race was not enough even for this first timer), I found that I passed a number of people in the last several miles who probably tried to keep a cool weather pace. Had the waether been better, I am sure more runners would have seen the course in a more positive light. Unfortunately, the organizers cannot influence the weather (the warmest weekend in months). Heat or not, it was great.

"Chris, you do a great job!" (about: 2003)

COURSE: 4  ORGANIZATION: 5  FANS: 4

I enjoyed the race -- yeah, the humidity was rather high and more port-a-potties at the start would have been good, but overall it was very well organized and the gendarmes kept the course safe even for us penguins ... and I think it can only get better -- the RD sends a newsletter outlining issues and how they will be fixed (if possible). I will be back soon (it is a 14 hr drive from Memphis!) ... Thanks to all the volunteers for making this a great race! For those who like flat, fast courses -- this Bud's for you ... for those who just like running because its in your blood, there's a FedEx for you too ...

"Decent Marathon That Will Only Get Better!!" (about: 2003)

COURSE: 3  ORGANIZATION: 3  FANS: 2

Overall it was a good marathon. I have to concur with most runners comments regarding the porta-potties and mile markers. A HUGE thanks to all the different law enforcement agencies that were postioned along the course ensuring our safety and giving encouragement along the way.
For only a four year old marathon, I think they have done a pretty decent job. Since many of the runners though were from out of town, I'd like to see the organizers put a few signs up on race day directing runners to the starting area from the main road. I drove in the day before from out of state and at 5AM on race day I had a little trouble remembering how I got to the start the day before.
The course was a little boring with not much beach to look at. Keep up the good work and good luck in the future...P.S. NICE MEDALS!!

"Plenty of room for improvement..." (about: 2003)

COURSE: 2  ORGANIZATION: 1  FANS: 1

Every aspect of this race could be improved. The 'expo' was not worth attending. The pasta party was a total rip off. There was not even a shuttle from the sponsoring hotel to the start line. The race did not start on time. The person who sang the national anthem was a bad singer. I could not understand the announcer. There were no spectators on the course. There were no split times read off during the race. I did not know my time until I saw it at the finish line. I almost got hit by a cyclist on the 'beautiful' Pinnelas trail. 70 degrees and high humidity is not suitable marathon running weather. Overall this race should be renamed the 'Florida Beatdown'

"Great marathon experience" (about: 2003)

COURSE: 5  ORGANIZATION: 5  FANS: 5

I had a great time running this marathon. The race was very well organized, the volunteers were great and the aid stations were well supplied. I especially liked how supportive the spectators, volunteers and other participants were, it's nice to hear positive words when you are feeling and looking your worse. I think that there were some undesireable factors on race day that could not be controlled by anyone and that everyone who participated should just remember all the positive points instead of dwelling on the weather, the way the wind blew and that there wasn't a porto-potty at the exact moment you had to use it.
I had a great time and I hope I am able to run it again next year.

"First Timer" (about: 2003)

COURSE: 4  ORGANIZATION: 4  FANS: 2

This was my first marathon and I made it to the end. The wind in my face the first 12 miles took a lot out of me even though I met my goal time at the half. Warm weather and realitively no wind in the second half made me somewhat sick to my stomach and caused my second half to be 30 minutes slower. I think if the weather had permitted I could have met my overall goal for the enitre run. I recovered faster than I anticipated and feel this is a great course if the weather cooperates. I might see you next year once again if I do not decide to try Hops instead. Thought the Web site was great and informative. Thanks for your effort!!

"Gulf Beaches a great course, weather, etc." (about: 2003)

COURSE: 5  ORGANIZATION: 4  FANS: 5

This is a great course, almost flat except for a couple of bridges(gotta have a way to get over the beautiful water)which allow for a great view of the beaches and gulf. Support every mile with water and Gatorade, restrooms along the way and spectator support was great. This is my second year to participate in the race with my husband and son. As with life, there are always a few hitches, but all in all this is a great race. Unfortunately, we cannot control the wind or any other factors of nature. I had a great run as did all my family and friends and I thank Chris for bringing this marathon to our great area.

"wonderful experience: top notch" (about: 2003)

The volunteers were fabulous; caring, helpful, excellent. This is a fine marathon and I will do it in the future. It was my 73rd marathon.

"Great for us Newbies!" (about: 2003)

COURSE: 5  ORGANIZATION: 3  FANS: 5

I think this marathon is great for us newbies (first timers). I'm from Pennsylvania, so the 'heat and humidity' were just fine with me. I came in 5th in my age group for my first marathon, so the only thing slowing me down was the wind!

The expo could have been a bit 'grander', I did wait a few minutes longer than I thought normal to pick up my packet, but heck, it was my first marathon, so who knew any better!

I agree with everyone else - more port-o-potties.

I thought the course was great. I was too focused on my time and running to notice if I was running past a hotel or the ocean, or people's back yards. I enjoyed the course, and coming from Bucks County in Pennsylvania - this course was flat - including the bridges!

Thanks for a great first experience. Had it not been for the wind, I think I would have qualified for Boston.
