"Small but pleasant!" (about: 2008)

I really didn't research this race much before running it so I was a little shocked at the lack of runners. I read that people running the full in over 5 hours were encouraged to start an hour early, but most people did, so I spent a lot of time on the course with no other runners in sight. The course is flat, easy, and the traffic fairly light. I hated the idea of a double out-and-back but it actually made for a mentally easy race. I ran my 2nd slowest time and still won my age group, if that tells you about the numbers... lol. The staff is sweet and supportive and Bob Green is a nice guy. They had plenty of stations and gels every other stand.

It's a good practice run but not one for beginners because the race atmosphere is almost nonexistent. I will probably do it again next time since it's close to home and you won't have trouble getting an entry! I'd like to see the medals engraved to the event! I found myself wondering what the $65 goes toward. If you're looking for a low-stress, small race on a flat course... you just found it.

"Loosely organized race" (about: 2007)

I chose this race as a training race. I thought it would be perfect because of the aid stations every couple of miles. I appreciated the two women at the aid stations; they were very supportive. Be sure that you have your own energy gels if you use them, because they were not at the aid stations as promised. The internet description of the race mentioned that the participants of the marathon could leave a half hour early but management never mentioned anything. It turns out a group left an hour early and another group after that. I was there at least an hour before the race began and would have preferred to leave early. The post-race food was not worth eating.

Bob puts on these races about once a month, all from Millersylvania Park. While they aren't horrible, I've finally kind of given up on them. The course is mostly flat and fast. The traffic is sparse, but uncontrolled, and in places it is fast and redneck; not so pleasant. After about mile 10 you will pretty much be running on your own, with maybe 1-2 people in sight. it's reasonably well marked, but not great. I've seen the clueless runner take wrong turns and run off into the distance. With so few participants you will almost certainly place, which is fun; but the medals are uncustomized and cracker-jack. The post race food is entertaining for being hilariously off-demographic, more like a baptist picnic: twinkies, oreos, pb&j with wonderbread, etc. It's the sort of spread that makes you wonder where the cigarettes are. I guess after driving down to one-too-many of these things I've come to loathe these races, and maybe am a little bitter that the only regular, monthly race around here isn't a whole lot better.

"Nice, very small, low-key marathon" (about: 2006)

This was a fun, very low-key marathon. It was on open roads, which wasn't a problem because it was such a small race (only 9 people finished the marathon). No spectators, except for the great volunteers at the aid stations. Great chili after the race and the campground had nice showers. If you need an expo, pasta dinner, spectators, bands along the course, etc., this isn't the race for you. But if you just want a well organized, fun race, check this one out.

"Nice training run" (about: 2006)

Training for a May marathon, I figured that I could do a long slow run here, have water and aid stations and pick up a 7th finisher's medal. New course is very flat, we ran the 1/2 out and back two times. My first ever negative split I felt great till mile 24. Total of 9 finishers I think, definately not for first timers. At mile 25.5 there were two people looking at a sign in the park. I actually yelled at them to please cheer for me. They did not know there was a race going on, but did give me some encouragement. The 5K, 10K and 1/2 finishers were long gone by the time I got in (4:11) and there was plenty of food available. Bob Greene always puts on a quality race at this park but it is very small time, and the course is on country roads with traffic.
