"Scenic, well-run, basic marathon" (about: 2021)

I ran the inaugural version (2021) of the Boulderthon. I think this race was formerly the Boulder Backroads and has been rebranded. It starts at the Boulder Reservoir, like the Boulder Backroads, and runs on the same dirt roads but ends up in downtown Boulder instead of back at the reservoir.

It was very well-run, especially considering it was initially supposed to take place in October, 2020. It did have a little bit of a 'no one came to my party' vibe to it. I'm attributing that to being the first one and not building up a following yet. I enjoyed it.

FYI:

1) Dirt/asphalt/concrete = 65/14/21%.

Pros:

1) Well-run, basic marathon. Good scenery.

2) Downtown Boulder finish. Cool and very convenient.

The cons were very minor. So minor, I'm calling them quibbles instead of cons.

Quibbles:

1) Miles 8-11 kinda sucked. This is up and down a pretty steep hill. And it's a dirt road that's in slightly worse shape than the rest of the dirt roads on the course. Brutal.

2) They closed the marathon gear check 40 minutes before the race start. I have no idea why. It makes no sense to me.

3) The faster marathoners ran up the back of the slower half-marathoners. (The marathoners had a one hour head start but didn't get back on the same course until mile 17.) I hit them at about mile 20, on a narrower part of the course (the Multi-Use path). It wasn't really a problem because the half-marathoners were pretty conscientiously keeping to the right. But it could be a problem if the race gets bigger.

4) The aid station sports drink was clear and looked like water. It was in white cups, just like the water. So you didn't know if what you grabbed was water or sports drink. Race directors: water white; Gatorade green! Can you puh-lease use white cups for water and non-white cups for the sports drink? I'm trying to make this a thing.
