Prize Money and Bonuses
We like to think about the purity of the sport - but at the end of the day the athletes are also competing for big money at the London Marathon. And we won't be naive enough to suggest that this won't be at the front of their minds when they are running the London Marathon course on Sunday.
The London Marathon wants its runners to run FAST. To ensure that happens, there are pacers to lead the runners, but there is also HUGE bonus money for the athletes to hit certain fast times (we'll also note that there are personal appearance/time bonuses for many of the invited athletes as well). At the Boston Marathon, there are no time bonuses (except a course record bonus) and the women in the 2009 Boston Marathon chose to run a strategic albeit very slow race. The other "World Marathon Majors" races have time bonuses, but none has the time structure that London employs. The men and women running London will go for speed and the big bucks that come with a fast time.
