"Nice winter marathon." (about: 2011)

All was well organized, but I think they should lose the relay. The relay gets in the way; they could run 10K instead.

"UGH!!!!" (about: 2011)

1. Shame on me for not reading the other comments, which warned of all the things that were going to go wrong.
2. This is a very poorly organized full marathon - you are in heavy traffic for at least half of the race (always on the road and the vistas are not that great).
3. I bailed because I was very concerned about the traffic for the second half of the race. I did finish the first loop-and cross the half-marathon finish line. They wouldn't even give me my half-marathon time. (I don't care about the age group thing; I would just like my official time.)
4. The post party was a zoo and totally overcrowded.
5. I will never do a two-loop marathon again.

"A 10K and half-marathon first." (about: 2011)

COURSE: 3  ORGANIZATION: 4  FANS: 3

I agree with all previous comments. There were over 4,000 people at the start, which was the same for all 3 races, so it was crowded. It is not a good marathon, but a chance to do a marathon in New England in February if you have to.

The course marshals were still there for the second lap, so you were not lost. But the food was gone by the time I finished in 4 hours.

Only do it if you need to.

"Should be called the "Hyannis Half Marathon"" (about: 2011)

1 previous marathon | 1 Hyannis Marathon
COURSE: 4  ORGANIZATION: 2  FANS: 3

This race is a 10k/half marathon with a marathon tacked on. There are thousands doing the half and 10K (or relay) and less than 400 in the full. And this race is truly geared towards the shorter distances. Support was all but gone for the 2nd half of the full and it was disappointing at the finish line as well. I am fine with no-frills races and would probably feel different if I had run the half. I wouldn't do the full here again but would come back for a shorter distance.

Pros:
-The fans were sparse (and pretty much nonexistent for the 2nd half of the full), but those who were there were awesome.
-The volunteers and police officers on the course were helpful and kind. Kudos to them for standing out in that wintry mix for hours.
-The half marathon course is great. Rolling hills and turns keep things interesting. It was less enjoyable the second time around, but that's probably true of all double loops.

Cons:
-The food was gone when marathoners finished. I finished in under four hours but all of the soup, food from Dunkin, and other goodies were completely gone. All that was left were stale bagel halves. Those who do 26.2 need post-race sustenance! There should be food reserved for marathoners.
-The medals and (cotton) t-shirts were the same for all distances. Minor point, but still lame.
-Announcers and music had shut down when I came in and they were even breaking down signage.
-The hotel before the race was a disaster. Way too crowded.
-Not enough port-o-potties at the start. Huge lines, so I used the bushes.

"Tough time of year weather-wise but an okay race" (about: 2011)

11-50 previous marathons | 1 Hyannis Marathon
COURSE: 4  ORGANIZATION: 4  FANS: 3

There are 4 races that take place: full, half, 10K and the relay. All races start at 10:00 a.m., which is a little later than normal, but due to the weather concerns, it is probably necessary. I did the 10K, which split from the pack at mile 5. The course is nice, running by the JFK Memorial right along the water and through the quaint downtown area. Be careful with this race though because it is late Feb. in Massachusetts. This year, it snowed the Friday before the race and on race-day, it was just wet snow in the morning that turned to rain, so we had no icy or snowy spots on the course, just lots of water puddles! The host hotel is okay - it is an old building with some upgrades but no great shakes; the best part is that the start/finish line is right outside the main door. The expo is pretty decent for a small race and pasta dinner was actually quite good.

The post-race food was also great but, because of the inclement weather, all of the post-race activities were held inside the ballrooms of the hotel, causing it to be very crowded and a lot less fun. Although the times were posted shortly after the race, they still were not posted on the website the next day. The medal is very nice, the website is well done and very informative, and the shirts are good, but the real thrill of this race is being in Hyannis. For someone from the south who has never been to the Cape, I enjoyed touring the JFK Museum and the other tourist attractions, even in the cold. For out-of-town travelers, be aware that if you fly into Boston, it is a 2-hour drive to Hyannis, which can make the return trip after the race long and tiring. Also, it is Feb. in Massachusetts, so the weather will be challenging, but overall, this is a race I would recommend.

"Caution: Half Marathon Disguised as a Marathon" (about: 2010)

11-50 previous marathons | 6+ Hyannis Marathons
COURSE: 3  ORGANIZATION: 2  FANS: 2

Water stops shut down on the second 13.1-mile loop, food was all gone at the marathon finish, heck, even the marathon medal is the same as the one for the half marathon. Just understand what you are getting into. Be aware that your higher race fee pays for the half marathoners to enjoy themselves.

Be spartan. Be a marathoner.

"Half-Marathon Race with Marathon Afterthought" (about: 2010)

6-10 previous marathons | 1 Hyannis Marathon
COURSE: 3  ORGANIZATION: 3  FANS: 3

The full marathon is really mostly an afterthought here - registration capped at 2,000 for the half, and 400 for the full. Same t-shirt, same finisher's medal, same course (two laps). It is, however, a 4-star half-marathon course, with stretches along beautiful beaches, enough gentle rolling terrain to make it interesting but not enough to make the race difficult, not much of an issue with traffic, and only a little bit of it on major roads.

Highs: Beaches, lots of fans in the first half for a smaller race, well-supplied water stations, mostly great volunteers, good parking, and the host hotel was generous with space before and after.

Lows: Mile markers were about two feet off of the ground and hard to find, and no splits were available, even at the half; almost no post-race massage was available; plastic cups at the water stations split when you squeezed them to make a spout; spectators almost all gave up after the half went by, so the second half was very lonely; and the start was a bit disorganized - they spent 10 minutes trying to get everyone backed up behind the starting line instead of having it cordoned off ahead of time.

"Great winter marathon in New England." (about: 2009)

I have run this marathon six or seven times. Weather can be cold, rainy, snowy, or warm. You never know in New England, but be prepared for anything. Great organization and fun post-race party.

It is a bit disappointing to have run a complete marathon only to find that the tracking chip did not work. I have yet to see my official results on the list of finishers. I am sure that it is just an oversight, but it does not make me want to run that race again.

11-50 previous marathons | 4-5 Hyannis Marathons

I have run this marathon four times. I love it. It is raw: There's not much fanfare, the weather can be tough, you have deal with traffic in some sections (it didn't affect my time), on the second loop the hills magically get bigger. :-) But where else can you run a February Marathon in NE? If you need to be pampered, this isn't your race. If you can't share the road with cars for a short period, this isn't your race.
