"Decent experience - needs improvement" (about: 2023)

11-50 previous marathons | 1 Hyannis Marathon
COURSE: 4  ORGANIZATION: 3  FANS: 2

Great people, nice course, but there is room for improvement. The first loop was great. Most people were there for the half, but once they were done the second loop consisted of very few full marathoners. As a result, the volunteers were barely paying attention and many of us went off course as the twists and turns are confusing if you don't know the town. The course is poorly marked in certain areas. I ran an extra half mile around mile 18 because I turned right when I should have gone straight. I was following the runners in front of me. We all ran by a group of volunteers who weren't paying attention and didn't say anything till it was too late (one of them eventually ran after us yelling and screaming for us to turn around, but I ran an extra half mile for no reason). I really appreciate the volunteers, don't get me wrong, but if you're out there you have to pay attention. Also, post race festivities sucked. No water or Gatorade to drink and barely any food. But at least there was a cash bar - because runners carry cash on them during a marathon. Just silly. In summary, decent experience but it could have been amazing with a few improvements. Oh and the cops were awesome. Thanks!

I am a very experienced runner, and I really enjoyed this race. It is a real season opener to get your marathon legs in gear. I don't mind 2 loops, it's pretty flat, with New England charm. I definitely recommend it. Come in 2021!!

"Best kept as a half marathon" (about: 2019)

11-50 previous marathons | 1 Hyannis Marathon

It's a double loop course. In the first half you are with the half marathoners so it's decent. In the second half there are many stretches where you are alone. It was confusing at points because the course was poorly marked. As a result, some runners went off course. A lot of the volunteers also started to leave or weren't doing their jobs at the aid stations or checkpoints. Lastly, you are sharing the road with local traffic and most are unaware that there is a marathon occurring which means you need to be extra cautious so you don't get hit by an unaware resident. I say that to mean some runners were almost ran over. The full caps at a few hundred participants and a little more than half showed up. Ultimately, the course was decent but there is a reason why really good marathoners don't participate in this one.

"It's a winter trainer - Don't expect too much" (about: 2018)

I ran this as a training run for Boston. My expectations were not that high, so I was not disappointed. I knew I was in for an uphill fight just because of the weather (low 40's and heavy with headwinds). I thought the race was good overall. Too many people want the shiny races. This has an old school feel to it, which I like. I would do this race again, if it fit in as a training run. I would never do it as a goal race.

Pros
-Good price
-Easy registration
-Great pre-race announcements
-Nice finish line
-Fast results
-Nice finish medal
-Fun and energetic spectators
-Fun post race atmosphere
-Easy parking
-Nice course

Cons
-1 shirt design for all the races.
-Poor pre-race signage
-No Bag check (Should have this no matter the size of the marathon)
-Oddly space water spots
-No Gu on the course
-Lack of signs for the second half of the race
-Volunteers stopped working the water stops. (I know that the weather was bad)
-Need to kick out the cones on the busy part of the course.

I am not fast enough for Boston soooo...
Hyannis was a good choice. We spent a day in Boston prior to driving down to Hyannis. It was chilly and windy the whole weekend.

We stayed at the Hyannis Travel Inn. VERY nice people and they had a Stay One Night, Get the 2nd Free deal!

Pros:
-Lengthy day of packet pickup & Expo (We did not rush to Saturday's packet pickup which closed at 5pm)
-Race starts at 10am so we were able to sleep a full night and not rush breakfast or getting ready. Plus the temperature was a bit warmer at 10am, which helped me being from the south.
-Parking was easy - there were lots of volunteers directing parking traffic.
-Water stops were plentiful and well stocked.
-On my second loop - a family near a water station was giving out Girl scout cookies!
-The course was nice with a mixture of beach views and beautiful neighborhoods.

Cons:
-A few more toilets along the course would have been nice.
-Once short section of the course was along a busy road. During the second loop of the course, traffic was much heavier. Having the cones there to separate us was great, but in a few spots the pavement/curb was in really bad shape and you almost had to get in the road go around it.

Overall-The race was enjoyable. The area is beautiful and full of history and things to see. This time of year a lot of restaurants/stores are closed for the season, but this forces you to eat where the locals eat. You also get to explore the town without tons of vacationers.

Would I do it again - Yes.

"Nice small town race with forgiving course" (about: 2017)

11-50 previous marathons
COURSE: 4  ORGANIZATION: 5  FANS: 4

This marathon was my 40th marathon. I set out with a mindset to 'just finish'. One thing that I really liked about this race is logistically we could have driven there to avoid the hotel cost the morning of because they offer race day pick up and the race starts at 10:00 am. They had showers that they offered runners for post-race so we technically did not had to get a hotel at all

The course is 2 (13.1 mile) loops. The 10K and ½ marathon runners start with the marathoners. It's pretty congested in the beginning but after the first mile it starts to open up. There is not a lot of crowd support because it's a small race but the people that cheered us on were out there for the duration of the race and pretty wonderful. The course is very forgiving too. There are some rolling hills but mostly flat. Beautiful small neighborhoods and the views of the ocean were beautiful.

They had Gatorade at the water stops. Not a fan of the plastic cups and they did not provide any GU on the course. They did have bananas at some of the later water stops. There was a table toward the end that had jelly beans, bottled water and bananas. I'm pretty sure that this was not part of the race but just a wonderful family that supported the race. We finished the first loop and the ½ marathoners finished. The course was now opened to traffic but there is only a couple sections that were busy with cars. I never felt that I was not safe. The post-race food was provided inside in the conference center. They had hot soup, bagels, fruit and a huge selection of cookies, snacks, chips, etc.

Like I mentioned earlier that I set out to 'just finish' and didn't look at my watch a lot so I wasn't sure how I did until I crossed the finish line. I ended up getting 3rd place in my age group and got a Boston Qualifying time. I would come back to run it again.

"Flat as Advertised - Great Course and Experience" (about: 2017)

11-50 previous marathons | 1 Hyannis Marathon
COURSE: 5  ORGANIZATION: 5  FANS: 3

Hyannis Marathon is a flat course. Sure there is wind but any course on any given day can be windy. The prior reviews I reluctantly read were written by some bitter folks unfortunately. Don't let those dissuade you from signing-up. Had the pleasure of running the last 1/3 or so of the marathon with another marathoner who couldn't have been any nicer. Really made this a memorable and fun experience.

"Where do I start..." (about: 2016)

11-50 previous marathons | 1 Hyannis Marathon

So this is was my 21st marathon but this was the first marathon I did not enjoy at all.

First off, when someone says that a marathon is 'flat and fast' I'm thinking ok its similar to the Florida coast. Yea this marathon was not flat at all. There were a couple of steep hills not mention we start off on a gradual hill.

Secondly, there was no water station for about three miles in beginning of the first and second loop of the race. Those three miles were near the ocean so logistically they probably thought it would be to windy. However there were a couple of spots they certainly could have placed a water station.

Now I did not post my best time for the marathon. As a matter of fact I was one of the last to finish. But when the race details of the marathon states you have a 6 hour time limit why would you start breaking equipment down before 6 hours is up. For instance, the Mad marathon had a 6 hour 30 minute time limit and after the time was up that is when they started breaking stuff down. Not 30 minutes before you the allotted time was up. So there was no food of water at the end.

I usually don't like to see the negative in a lot of things but I would really do my research on these marathons that come at a cheap price because you might have a cheap experience. The one good highlight of the marathon was an elderly woman was gracious enough to offer me some gummy bears and Gatorade around the 18th mile. Other than that this is not a marathon I would do again nor would I encourage any one to run even with the cheap price.

"Can be fun, can be miserable" (about: 2013)

6-10 previous marathons | 1 Hyannis Marathon
COURSE: 3  ORGANIZATION: 4  FANS: 3

I've run this as a half one year and ran it as a full the next year. The year as a half, the weather was great nice late February weather, not too cool, not raining, overall very nice. The next year it was really awful it started raining at the start of the race, temperature dropped significantly during the race and it was snowing by the time I finished. I've never been so cold in my life my muscles wouldn't move and I couldn't stop shivering. At one point I stepped into a puddle and it was so cold my toes immediately curled up and I had to limp along until it thawed out. So in sum, it can depend heavily on the weather.

But, all that being said, it's a fun local marathon. Crowd support for these is spotty but cheerful, people set up on their lawns enjoying the experience. Good number of water stations and the start is well organized

Course is a little bare at parts and the two loop full marathon course loses some credit for that. Some sections are very nice along the ocean, some pretty dull along a highway.

Overall, I would recommend the half over the full. The half, even in bad weather, wouldn't be too long so can suffer through. The course is nice and the crowds are good. The full is a bit repetitive and could be really tough if the weather gets bad.
