"Impressive Start!" (about: 2002)

COURSE: 5  ORGANIZATION: 4  FANS: 5

This was my second marathon and I thoroughly enjoyed it. Family and friends were able to see me a number of times thanks to the course design. Fans and course support were outstanding. I was particularly impressed that organizers were able to get Metro running early so runners could easily get to the start. I didn't check my bags so I avoided what appears to be the major drawback and I was more than a little dissappointed with the race t-shirt. However, these things are minor in what I believe was an outstanding first event.

"Great course, Great people, Great run!" (about: 2002)

I decided not to finish my home town marathon (Los Angeles) to be able to run DC. Although it is still early in 2002, it was by far my best decision to date. The DC marathon was terrific- running through history. Picture perfect monuments. The capital of this great country. What a trip! I loved it and will be back in 2003 (just wish it was a few weeks later in the year, so i could still run LA) Anyone looking to have a great time on a fairly flat and easy course should consider this race. The only issues I had were the traffic, cars on the course and the lack of porta-jons- I marked many a bush along the 26.2 miles.

"Well done! Great marathon!" (General Comments)

I had nothing but a wonderful experience running this marathon! The expo was well stocked, not crowded and had some fun stuff to keep the kids happy too! What a great idea to have FREE pacer groups ... perfect for anyone looking for a PR or just wanting some support through the course.

The course was beautiful! I thought the fans were great. I liked having a mix of quiet areas to run and focus and then hitting strips of screaming fans! They seemed to be there just when you needed them and DC fans know how to cheer runners!

The finish was a bit crowded (I personally never check a bag - and was glad not to have to wait in that line) and the markers for meeting family were a bit hard to see. I know both will change next year. The pumping music and great crowds at the finish were great!

A big thanks to all those smiling volunteers! What a great group of people! Well done everyone!

"Excellent Marathon, Highly Recommended" (about: 2002)

COURSE: 5  ORGANIZATION: 4  FANS: 4

Great course. It was thrilling to run by the Capital and historical monuments. The course was challenging at the end because of some uphills. Runners and crowd very friendly. Would recommend this marathon for both experienced and novice marathoners. This race will give NY and Chicago serious competition. I will run it again in 2003!

"Very Good Race" (about: 2002)

COURSE: 5  ORGANIZATION: 4  FANS: 4

Glad to see that the overall comments are favorable because the race was a very good experience for me. Reading the negative comments it seems that some runners never give up searching for that perfect marathon (nor do they give up complaining when they don't find it). Whether it's no beer at the finish, or a steep downhill where they think it shouldn't be, or not enough rabid spectators where they think they should be, or no bands (since when did bands become a required part of a marathon?), they are never satisfied. I'd rather remember the great weather, the fair and interesting course, and the many volunteers who helped us before, during, and after the race.

"Great as long as you're under 6:00!" (about: 2002)

This was my second marathon (MCM was first), and I had a blast! Not big crowd support by any means, but I appreciate anybody willing to spend some time cheering us on! I wasn't sure what to expect from folks stuck in traffic, but received only encouragement from everybody I passed. Saw totally new parts of DC, and greatly appreciated the running downhill for the last couple of miles. I also really appreciate having both spring and fall marathons so close to home, so hope that they continue this one. It certainly was a bonus that DC dished up an absolutely gorgeous day to be out and running.

Couple of suggestions. As a back-of-the-packer, it was unnerving to have the streetsweeper nipping at my heels (though it certainly provided motivation), and my goal became to get to the next mile marker before they unplugged the clock. Bathrooms earlier in the course would be greatly appreciated. Great thing about being a slow runner - no lines at the bag pickup!

Since I plan/hope to increase my pace over the summer, I definitely plan to run this again!

"Traffic Control Problems" (about: 2002)

COURSE: 3  ORGANIZATION: 4  FANS: 1

I enjoyed running this marathon. There were few spectators along the route. I did love the beer in paper cups at mile 17, although I'm sure that was not a part of the organized effort. The small number of runners made getting into and out of the port-a-potties very easy.

My one negative observation is the traffic control problem. Streets with no center island and car traffic in one lane, runners in the other, separated only by orange cones. Later in the race police officers were allowing cars to cross the race path also. Sometimes the traffic wouldn't even stop or obey the police officers. A potential disaster in the making.

My hunch would be that this marathon should improve next year.

"WONDERFUL WAY TO SEE DC" (General Comments)

COURSE: 4  ORGANIZATION: 4  FANS: 4

The course was fun to run, but did not expect the few hills. The weather could not have been better for me. DC police were great in how they handled Palm Sunday traffic and spectators.

"Good race." (about: 2002)

I enjoyed running this race. The organization was just fine, with the exception of the bag pick up after the race. The volunteers were friendly and the spectators enthusiastic, especially the last few miles.

A Runner from Green Bay, WI (3/28/2002)
"Everything lined up perfectly" (about: 2002)

COURSE: 5  ORGANIZATION: 3  FANS: 5

I came in from Wisconsin to run this marathon, and was very pleased. The city is easy to get around, the start easy to get to, and the finish very close to the host hotel (Marriot Metro Center). To me those are important, as you do not want to have to struggle to the start line or back to your hotel, if you're from out of town. The course itself was great, and the fans were very vocal when you needed them, especially at the one big hill aorund mile 21. Plenty of fluids as well. Other than the bag pickup, this is definitely 5 stars all the way, and I am sure they will have that corrected next year. Great job!!
