COURSE: 4 ORGANIZATION: 5 FANS: 5 This was my second marathon (my first was Phoenix, last January), and I was a little nervous after reading last year's reviews. Most of the negatives were about the camber in the road on the hill from mile 7-10. I must say this was a complete non-factor. I followed the advice of staying to the left shoulder of the road, and I had no problems whatsoever! Organization was excellent, as was the crowd support and expo. Thank you, San Diego and Elite Racing! See you in San Antonio!

COURSE: 4 ORGANIZATION: 4 FANS: 5 The 2006 San Diego RnR race is still my PR, and I love the course and the organization. San Diego is a terrific city to spend your non-running time in, and the race itself is very well-organized and a blast to run. The expo takes up an entire floor of the San Diego Convention Center, and is loaded with anything and everything of interest to runners. The course itself is flat and generally more than wide enough to comfortably accommodate the large pack of runners. Throngs of enthusiastic spectators line the route from beginning to end, and all the live bands provide great atmosphere and motivation. Finally, Elite Racing beats 'em all when it comes to finishers' medals and t-shirts. I WILL be back next year!

COURSE: 4 ORGANIZATION: 4 FANS: 5 This was only my second marathon, so I still need more experience in judging what is a superb event and what is a substandard one. Nevertheless, I enjoyed the Rock and Roll experience. Here are my pros and cons: Pros: 1. Scenic course for a big-city marathon (downtown San Diego is very well-kept). 2. Spectators came out in force: there were hardly any lonely areas. 3. There was plenty of water and Accelerade being handed out. 4. The expo and finish line festival were very organized and well run. 5. The weather was GREAT! Cons: 1. The camber on the 163 did bang up my quads (although it isn't a long stretch). 2. One too many turns on the course, especially between miles 22-23. 3. The 2-mile walk to the car from the finish line almost killed me. I also heard from my family that getting inside MCRD was a major headache. In the end the pros outweigh the cons, so I would highly recommend this event and plan to return again.

"Only minor complaints, overall great experience" (about: 2008)

COURSE: 4 ORGANIZATION: 5 FANS: 5 This was my first marathon, so I don't know how it compares. Use the restroom and check in your bag early, especially if your last name is toward the end of the alphabet, because this will take awhile. Yes, the course is slanted in some places, but relatively flat otherwise. At the first few Accelerade stations I had to wait while they poured a cup for me, but it got better as it went on. Crowd support was amazing, especially all the kids cheerleading. Someone gave us orange slices, and it felt like one entire street was out, kids and all, with their hoses. That was awesome. I enjoyed it, and as a slow runner who ran even slower than expected, I liked that I felt no pressure to be done since the course was still very much open when I finished, and I had no trouble getting my fill of food at the end. I recommend it, at least once. Not always the most scenic views, but plenty of places had a good breeze come in.

COURSE: 5 ORGANIZATION: 5 FANS: 5 This was my first full marathon! It was an extremely fun and challenging experience from start to finish. Fans were awesome and extremely encouraging. The course was beautiful. I just don't get some of the negative comments from some of the participants. I guess it goes back to the old saying, "You can't please all of the people all of the time; you can't even please some of the people some of the time." Well done! I will be back next year. Thank you, San Diego!

COURSE: 5 ORGANIZATION: 5 FANS: 5 San Diego Rock N Roll Marathon on 6/1/08 was my first full marathon. I would recommend it to anyone who wants a "fun" marathon regardless of pace/ability/experience. I know experienced marathoners tend to shy away from big races, but I had a blast from start to finish. The expo was well organized and the race-day experience was my best yet. Note: I've previously run three half marathons, six 5K's and two 10K's, so I'm not new to racing. The bands were high-energy, as were the cheer squads. The crowd support and volunteers were top-notch as well. It's already on my calendar for next year!!!

"Coming back in '09" (about: 2008)
First Marathon
COURSE: 5 ORGANIZATION: 5 FANS: 4 Like many others in this race, I was a marathon virgin. This is the race at which to lose your marathon virginity. I had a blast! I couldn't have asked for more... there were bands, crowds and plenty of water stops (none of which ran out of water). Everyone was very friendly - the volunteers, organizers at the expo, runners, walkers and the crowd! TNT is a great organization, and while 26.2 miles of "go TNT" can be a bit overbearing, every time I heard a cheer for TNT, I would substitute my own name for "TNT." I cannot say enough positive things about this race! I never thought I would be a marathoner and now I can't wait to run my next race.

"Frankly Awesome" (about: 2008)

COURSE: 5 ORGANIZATION: 5 FANS: 5 Everything in this event is 100%. Packet pick up was a breeze. You could hear a pin drop at the playing of the national anthem. Very emotional. I love the whole concept of this race. Water stations, spectators... the whole event was mind-blowing. I loved the Spirit of America and Margaritaville water stops. Were they great or what? Finishing at the MCRD was wonderful and that band playing for us were world-class. Shame on the runners for bashing TNT. I don't run with them, but they are out there having fun and raising cash, so what is the problem? I would like to thank everyone connected with this race for giving us a very meaningful (and above all, fun) day. This was my third R&R, and all I can say is that it rocks. One thing, guys: down the line, how about a half as well? Elite Racing, you put on a wonderful show.

"Bands, Spactators, and Course - Fantastic!" (about: 2008)

COURSE: 5 ORGANIZATION: 5 FANS: 5 This was my second marathon. I was really looking forward to the bands, but was pleasantly surprised with so much more! The number of runners was great. I have run other events (1 full and multiple halves) where the majority of runners were running the half. It was fun having so many people around for the whole course. Another thing that was so surprising was the number of fans/spectators (I'd like to invite them to my next training run ;-). The bands were the highlight of the day! My plan was to run from band to band and stop and recorder a clip with my flip digital video camera. That is exactly what I did and I really was amazed how quickly the miles clicked off - what a pleasant distraction! The course was great. Running around Mission Bay was very nice and the Running Elvises were hilarious! The expo was organized very well. The weather was very refreshing. I realized how humid it actually is in my home state of Missouri when there was hardly any in San Diego. I would HIGHLY recommend this marathon to first-timers and seasoned alike.

COURSE: 4 ORGANIZATION: 5 FANS: 5 No kidding, San Diego is HILLY! Be prepared for the hills. And the heat. I had never run a RnR before, and I was not disappointed. The course support was exceptional from start to finish. Loved the Accelerade (thank God, no more yellow Gatorade!), the salt packets, the medical stations for much-needed Tylenol and the overall attitude of the volunteers, which was always cheerful and helpful. Fan support was constant and welcome. This race was extremely well organized and executed. I would recommend it to anyone! |
