"Great Sponsor - Rolling but Enjoyable Course" (about: 2007)

| 1 Bass Pro Shops Marathon
COURSE: 4 ORGANIZATION: 4 FANS: 3 Outdoor World/Bass Pro Shops proved an excellent sponsor for a fun race (the free tickets to Wonders of Wildlife proved a nice benny). People were friendly, volunteers were strategically placed throughout the course and also before and after the race. Springfield proved a nice venue and the weather was extremely cooperative. Overall - a fun and even relatively scenic course - with some great fall foliage along the route. However, the course cannot really be called fast or flat - it was very rolling throughout. No particularly steep or long grades, but very few sections were even flat for short distances. I would also note some very steep turns - esp. in the trail section of the course (which was concrete) - I watched a wheelchair participant wait to cross a bridge when the race was going both ways across the bridge because there wasn't room for her to turn onto the bridge without obstructing oncoming runners. Also worth pointing out that there were only large shirts for half-marathon participants, the race results were hard to find and not very illustrative in the many ways runners like to 'keep track', and runners were never sent confirmation that there registrations had been received. All in all, still a well-run event and a fun course. The number of runners didn't overwhelm the venue - and didn't even consume all the post race food too soon (which was pretty good, by the way)!

COURSE: 5 ORGANIZATION: 5 FANS: 5 Great run! Great choice of charities. The volunteers were the best! The course was beautiful, and having great weather helped a lot. The long-sleeve shirts are the best I have seen of any race. I did not get a medal though! I assumed it was only for people who did the full marathon, but the volunteer did not tell me anything!

"Tough course for a flat-lander..." (about: 2007)

COURSE: 4 ORGANIZATION: 3 FANS: 5 I had a great time participating in this race as a walker. I was hoping for a sub-6-hour finish time... but the hills just proved too tough for a Gulf Coast Plains resident. I finished in 6:06, which was a PR for me. I have never done a race this small... and I was impressed with the number of volunteers, and also loved the military presence near the finish line! Beautiful course! Great pre-race pasta dinner! I will agree that the packet pick up was a little disorganized, and the medal was kind of small... but overall, it was a great race experience... and getting two technical-fabric, long-sleeve shirts was a big plus. We also received a finisher's cap.

COURSE: 4 ORGANIZATION: 3 FANS: 2 I was in the bass pro training group so i had the advantage of doing all my training on the course. I thought the course was great. I loved the big mile markers. The 6.2 mile marker made me laugh.(cute)I thought it was great that you provided gels at many of the drink stations. The volunteers were great and very encouraging and the band from Hillcrest was great!! I thought the pasta dinner was the best that i have seen at any race. However, i was extremely disappointed in the smallest medal i have ever seen given at a marathon. I also think there should be a difference in the marathoner bibs and the 1/2 marathoner bibs. I finished the marathon with a personal record and was very excited. I finished after 4 hours and was quite upset to find out there was no food left except ice cream sandwiches and milk and cereal. After you run a full marathon dairy doesn't sound very good. I thought the commentator did a great job but i did think that the awards after the race were a little to spread out. The massages were AWESOME. I loved that you were able to get the celebrities that you did. Thankyou

"I had fun, but the marathon was poorly Organized!!" (about: 2007)
6-10 previous marathons
| 1 Bass Pro Shops Marathon
COURSE: 4 ORGANIZATION: 1 FANS: 3 Over all I enjoyed the marathon, Springfield is lovely this time of year. However I feel the marathon was very poorly organized & executed. I'm not sure if I will do it again! This was not my first half marathon, & I would like to apologize to any first timers & to the people who traveled to compete in this race. They are normally better than this, don't give up, it gets better! I pre-registered in early September to save some time, which ended up being a waste of time. Because when I went to pick up my packet & shirt I found out I was not on the list. Even though I had my conformation # & I had pre-registered. Then they were out of my shirt size. And finally I was very disappointed after walk/running 13 miles to not get my medal or a hat. I was told one would be mailed to be, but, if they didn't have my information when I registered, how are they going to send it to me. I would liked to have seen more aid stations & potties. This race seemed to be one disappointment after another. These things seem petty, but when put all together add up. On the positive side of things, all the volunteers were great!! It was nice to have someone at all the intersections & to see some of Springfield's finest working the busy intersections! I am a local, & I was very excited about not having to travel this time. I know this was the first year, & it was a learning experience, hopefully next year is better.

"Just OK" (about: 2007)

| 1 Bass Pro Shops Marathon
COURSE: 3 ORGANIZATION: 2 FANS: 1 Where are the results? This needs lots of work. Only pre-race refreshment was Starbucks for sale. No porta-potties at the start, so long lines in the store. Aid station workers left the stations unattended in late stages of the marathon. Very Basic support. Either have a marathon or have an outdoor fitness festival. Bet you they put on a heck of a fishing event.

"Perfect Temp" (about: 2007)
11-50 previous marathons
| 1 Bass Pro Shops Marathon
COURSE: 4 ORGANIZATION: 4 FANS: 4 Before I comment on other areas of the event I have to begin with what a perfect day it was to race. Couldn't have been better! Other comments... 1. Perhaps it's me, but I haven't located the results. Are they listed and I overlooked them? 2. Water and energy drinks, be consistent on which side they're located, water right, drink left. 3. You've already heard, t-shirts and medals, better to have a few extra than entertain complaints. 4. Medals, perhaps an upgrade next year. Also, just an opinion, are the 1/2 medals nicer looking than the full? 5. I emailed more than a week prior to the race and asked the number of entrants for the full, answer was 1500. (?) 6. Mark our maps better regarding locations of mile markers. Not necessarily for the runners, but for the spectators and where they might be able to see competitors. 7. The word flat was used in the description of the course. Not exactly accurate. Most of the suggestions are minor but are easily implemented and could make for a better race experience. Overall-Nice day, nice race, nice people and definitely recommended.

"Great race. Great organization. Great fans." (about: 2007)

COURSE: 5 ORGANIZATION: 5 FANS: 5 Yes, I got the T-shirt of my size. So, no complaint there, for the shirt was awesome. It was my first half-marathon race, and I had trained on the course, but I was still pleasantly surprised at the turning colors along our path, for it was either too green or too dark for me to see in training runs. I was also impressed with the organization, especially for the first-time event with a turnout larger than expected. Aid stations were well stocked, the pasta dinner was awesome, and a good choice of post-race snacks and drinks. I also was surprised to see so many spectators and fans along the course, cheering us on.

"Response to Mr. Miller" (about: 2007)
6-10 previous marathons
| 1 Bass Pro Shops Marathon
COURSE: 5 ORGANIZATION: 4 FANS: 5 First of all, this was not the second year - "inaugural" means that it was the first year. Second, the 6.2 mark was between mile 6 and 7, signifying the 10K mark, which was a corporate relay exchange point. The sign also said "Corporate Relay Marathon Exchange." All in all, I thought that the marathon was very well done for the first year. I think that many of the complaints are about things that will be ironed out as the marathon grows in the future.

"Overall, an enjoyable experience." (about: 2007)
First Marathon
COURSE: 4 ORGANIZATION: 4 FANS: 5 Overall, it was a very memorable and enjoyable experience. The only issue I had was that this was my first half-marathon and I was pre-registered; however, I had to get a marathon shirt because they ran out of half-marathon shirts. Then on top of it, I didn't get a half-marathon medal because they ran out of those too. All and all, the crowd was great and the run was fun. |
