COURSE: 4 ORGANIZATION: 5 FANS: 5 The volunteers and spectators were extremely supportive! This was my first marathon and I was very motivated and pleased to see so many people cheering on all participants. It was a good course with rolling hills.

"The beginning of great things to come" (about: 2007)

COURSE: 5 ORGANIZATION: 4 FANS: 5 I've never had so much fun at a running event in my life. Not just a 'road race' an EVENT! There were so many activities that even the non-running family members had plenty to do. This is truly a family event. The course was challenging and well marked. The trails were beautiful with their fall colors. They must have had an in with Mother Nature because the weather was perfect. There were plenty of drinks at each throughout the course and the volunteers were so supportive. The sponsors were generous with technical fabric shirts and finisher caps and ALL the door prizes that were given away. The pasta dinner on Saturday was delicious and the celebrity speakers were inspiring. This is just the beginning for this great event. This one will grow exponentially.

"It's a good start for a great event!" (about: 2007)

COURSE: 3 ORGANIZATION: 4 FANS: 3 I ran the half marathon this weekend and thought it was good. I wondered why we didn't go to downtown as they have a great downtown area. The volunteers were awesome on the course! They need to mark the restrooms on the course map and the mileage. Besides that, the finish in the Pro Shop was too cool and very comfortable. Great job!

"Weather cool, pace fast and great people." (about: 2007)

COURSE: 3 ORGANIZATION: 4 FANS: 4 Did not see any place to go to the bathroom; I saw people going by the trees. Drinks and spectators were great. Course was a little hillier than what I and several other people expected, but it was still very enjoyable. The miles were marked and made it very easy to follow. Had a great time, all in all.

"Overall a great marathon" (about: 2007)

COURSE: 5 ORGANIZATION: 3 FANS: 3 I registered the day before the marathon and received the shirt that I wanted. There was a little confusion as to where we were supposed to get the tickets to the pasta dinner. The pasta dinner was at 4:30 pm but no indication as to how late you could eat dinner. Arrived at 6:30 pm and they were cleaning up the room so decided to go out to eat. With setting clocks back 1 hour, it seems like you should still be serving at 6:30 pm. Please make the serving times clear in the future. The start was a little congested so consider starting the half and full at different times. Also, mark the starting corral with estimated finishing times. Volunteers were great and pleased to see E-Gel was provided, but this information would be helpful in the race description. The bottles of water provided at some stations are a great idea. The course was very nice, following the paved trail system in places with several sections being and out and back. There was someone to check off the runners to make sure they went all the way out. I didn't notice any major hills other than the bridge we went over. The elevation profile is kind of deceiving. This is a fairly flat course and accurately stated in the description. The drawing for prizes at the awards ceremony was a great idea to keep people. However, it went on a little long and the awards ceremony was a little lengthy as well. I noticed the results posted are a little strange. There is time and net time. It says the difference between everyone's net and chip time is 14 seconds. This cannot be the same for everyone. I had a difference of 33 seconds on my watch so my posted chip time is 14 seconds slower than I actually ran. For people trying to qualify for Boston 14 seconds could be the difference between qualifying and not qualifying. Please get your timing issues worked out. Also, there isn't a link to the results on the marathon page. I had to search for the timing company and found the results on their page http://www.ridgerunnersports.com/. I shouldn't have to look that hard for this information.

"I had lots of fun" (about: 2007)

| 1 Bass Pro Shops Marathon
COURSE: 5 ORGANIZATION: 5 FANS: 5 Despite some hiccups, I thought this was a beautiful race that was well organized by friendly people. The runs along the rivers were great, although, because of the relatively small number of marathon participants (300?), there were long stretches where I ran alone. The volunteers were outstanding, and I thought they did a commendable job for an inaugural event. I'll be back, and I look forward to it. My only complaint is that I thought the keepsake medal could be a bit bigger and at least mention that it represents a marathon event.

"first year glitches" (about: 2007)
11-50 previous marathons
| 1 Bass Pro Shops Marathon
COURSE: 5 ORGANIZATION: 3 FANS: 4 the weather and the course were absolutely wonderful. quite a good number of spectators for the small size of the field. great aid stations and police support at intersections. Pre-race pasta dinner with four featured speakers was outstanding. packet-pick up and expo were disappointing, but the biggest disappointment was having to wait over an hour for awards and still needing to leave before even 5% were announced so as not to miss our flight home. My friend and I probably placed, hopefully what was in the envelops will be mailed as they promised. Hopefully in future years they will be able to speed up results and awards.

"Good run for a small town." (about: 2007)
4-5 previous marathons
| 1 Bass Pro Shops Marathon
COURSE: 5 ORGANIZATION: 3 FANS: 3 The running/bike trails in Springfield provided a great layout for the race. The people that came out to help at the aid stations were absolutely great. And the spectators that did show up were very friendly. As we crossed roads and affected traffic, I got the feeling that the runners were more of a hindrance to the rest of the town though. I could also tell that the bike-riders on the trail wanted nothing to do with us as they passed without comment or warning. I also agree with the other reviewer who asked, "Can't they keep bikes off the trail for this event?" I was also surprised that they had no timing or pace clocks placed anywhere on the course. If you weren't wearing a watch, you wouldn't know your time until you crossed the finish line. Although it may seem trivial, the finishing medals were the cheapest I've seen. My main concern is that it's now Monday morning after the race and nowhere on their site, or the local paper's site, do they have the race results posted. Overall the course was great, and the people were great; it's just the technical details of coordinating a race that were a little disappointing.

"Not what I expected..." (about: 2007)
6-10 previous marathons
| 1 Bass Pro Shops Marathon
COURSE: 4 ORGANIZATION: 2 FANS: 2 I finished the 1/2 marathon, with a new personal best, and was given a medal. I thought it was odd that it did not signify whether it was a full or half. Later a friend finished and got her 1/2 medal. It was then I realized I was given the wrong medal. When I went to switch it, they were OUT of medals. How can this be when I pre-registered? I know it's not a huge deal, but everyone wears their medals around after the race, taking pics etc., and I had nothing to show for running 13.1 miles or for the fact that I set a new PB. I was disappointed. I thought the race was a little disorganized. |
