"Great winter race and fans!!" (about: 2004)
COURSE: 4 ORGANIZATION: 5 FANS: 5 I visited this site a day before I ran this year's race and was a little scared by the comments I read. This was my first marathon, so all I had to go off of were a lot of negative comments. I had a great race experience this year at Charlotte. The course was fine, temps were cold, but it is the beginning of January. But I was amazed at how great the volunteers, fans, and people of Charlotte were. There were tons of people cheering you on from cars in addition to the fans that came out the support the race. The water stations were fine, plenty of volunteers and the race was very organized. Thanks Charlotte!!

"Excellent race all around" (about: 2004)
COURSE: 5 ORGANIZATION: 5 FANS: 5 It was certainly colder than anyone expected, but that makes the crowd support and the outstanding work of the volunteers and traffic control all the more impressive. Course was challenging but not excessively so - of course, I live and train in WV, so hills are part and parcel of my training. I like a varied course. Water stops were plentiful and well placed, finish line was efficient. The temperature (in the 20's) was not something that could be controlled, and even that wasn't so bad once I got started. I had a great time.

"Cold run, but fun!" (General Comments)
COURSE: 5 ORGANIZATION: 4 FANS: 3 Wow. I never knew that Charlotte would be sooo cold. Approx. 20 degrees with the wind chill factored in at the start. Beautiful rolling hill course passing by georgeous homes. Great small marathon with adaquate water stations along the way. Not a whole lot of fans, but the ones out there braving the cold were loud. Really felt the chill around mile 17. I will definitely consider coming back in the future.

"Very lovely small marathon with good support!" (about: 2004)
COURSE: 4 ORGANIZATION: 5 FANS: 4 You will want to train on hills for this marathon--there were not any flat spots. The people were great, they were very well organized, and I had a blast! My first experience of running without any friends--the crowds made me feel welcome!

"Well Organized Race with Plenty of Hills" (about: 2004)
COURSE: 4 ORGANIZATION: 4 FANS: 3 A well organized event with a nice loop course that starts in downtown Charlotte and winds through the city's best sections. There are a number of hills that make for an intersting run. The police race, staff and volunteers at the fluid stops were polite and helpful. Too bad the weather was so cold! The temp. at race start was around 30 degrees. I'll be back next year.

"Great first marathon" (about: 2004)
COURSE: 5 ORGANIZATION: 5 FANS: 4 This was my first marathon and I learned a lot. The temps. were COLD with winds out of the North and scattered snow flurries. The Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police Department did an outstanding job with traffic safety and encouraged runners throughout the course! Thanks guys, you were awesome. At least two of the aid stations between mile 4 and 10 were overwhelmed and did not have adequate resources to keep water/Powerade filled and handed out. Had to run by these. I was also very disappointed that the Gu ran out(?). Seems like I saw a whole truck full of the stuff but the representative was telling runners they had Gu at the next aid station. When we got there the workers said they had it back up the street! What's up with that? Next time I'll know better and pre-plan. All in all I had a great marathon experience in the second largest banking center in the U.S.A. See you next year.

"Good time" (about: 2003)
COURSE: 5 ORGANIZATION: 2 FANS: 3 First marathon. COLD,COLD,COLD. Enjoyed it for the most part. Tough course, very continous rolling hills made it a tougher course than I had thought from driving it. Water stops were supposed to be every 2 miles until twenty and then every mile. this however was not the case. If you advertise it, you need to have it. Planning is done based on the idea that water would be in certain places. Gel was at one stop, about mile 18. Over good marathon, may come back again. Next time I will be better prepared. This was an amazing learning experience. Look forward to next fall and my second marathon.

"Challenging course..good organization." (about: 2003)
COURSE: 4 ORGANIZATION: 5 FANS: 4 I enjoyed the camaraderie on the bus ride out, the pre-race accommodations were fine, and the start had a great small town feel. About 1/2 way through I figured out that the relay guys were the ones with the ankle straps - great to have with us. I actually liked the loop and out & back - to check on the competition. The biggest hill is really from 23-24 miles, but after that you have a nice downhill cruise. All intersections were very well monitored. The host hotel was very convenient, and reasonable. Only downside, the one time I set a PR and there's no camera man. Oh well, was hoping to get a picture of the sweat icicles hanging from my glasses! Great job guys, and thanks to all the volunteers!

"Overall a very good marathon!" (about: 2003)
COURSE: 4 ORGANIZATION: 4 FANS: 2 This was the first marathon for myself and my husband. We thought the organization/course were done well. However, there were NO port-a-potties!! Nowhere along the route were there marathon sponsored potties! Very discouraging, especially for the ladies! Luckily there was a convenient store at mile 13 that let us use theirs. Not as many supporters out but the day was very cold! I think I would have enjoyed race much more if we were into the city sooner and running around the city more. Our experience at this race was a good one! We had a great time!

"A good January run" (about: 2003)
COURSE: 4 ORGANIZATION: 4 FANS: 4 Staying in shape in the winter can be a challenge without a race or two to run. For me the big item with this race is the date. I am sure it would be easier to get spectators and volunteers out when temps are a little warmer. But this is a good course, organization and many thanks to the spectators who stood for hours in the very cold to say encouraging words. I will be back because it is a good option for mid January. |
