"Crappy weather, so-so race" (about: 2002)

COURSE: 3  ORGANIZATION: 3  FANS: 1

Cold and raining day with little to no fan support can't say that I blame them. Lots of police and helpers on the course though. A few hills to keep you honest, but nothing killer. Hardly any time clocks on the course, easy to see mile markers. No beer at the end and the 10K awards blocked the medical tents. No real after race party. If you want an after race party, run Myrtle Beach - the best you'll find. Had no idea until the end, I finished third (relay was going on as well and was very diffcult to tell who was who). Trophy was very 'artistic'. I feel no big attraction to going back.

"Kudos to organizers & vols, considering the wex!" (about: 2002)

COURSE: 4  ORGANIZATION: 5  FANS: 2

Considering the weather, I had a much better time than initially anticpated in the first mile or two. This was my 16th marathon in 4 years and my first in such inclement weather (for a Florida boy!).

Congrats to the organizers and especially the course volunteers and police force that staffed the aid stations and the intersections. You were super and there for us the whole way, which is more than I can say for much bigger marathons and warmer climes. As a back-of-the-pack runner (and I mean way back) I'm used to seeing no volunteers at aid stations by mile 20. Good job!

I had a good time (5hours 40 minutes). Enjoyed the route, tho a bit boring occassionally. Pre race dinner was superb. On time start. Chip worked except for the first split.

I'll recommend Charlotte. Thanks for the memories!

"Fast course; well organized; supportive fans" (about: 2002)

COURSE: 5  ORGANIZATION: 4  FANS: 4

The weather was brutal in 2002. Even so, the fans and organization were terrific to very good. Course is flat for the majority of the race. Mile markers are easily seen. Terrific job with calling out for water, Powerade and sports gel. Food afterwards was very good.

"Running in the cold and NO chip time?" (about: 2002)

COURSE: 4  ORGANIZATION: 4  FANS: 2

I had a similar problem to another runner on this website. My chip did not go off, either. This is the first race this has happened to me, and a big disappointment. The fans who DID come out were great, as were the police officers on the course. I will not even start on the weather.... a major downfall. Thanks to all who did come out, though. Better luck next year, I suppose.

"Run this marathon!" (about: 2002)

Even though it was a miserable day, everything about this race was done great. I have run 15 marathons and this ranks right up there with the best. Great packet pick-up. Cheap host hotel with coach bus transportation to the start. A warm place to relax and stretch at Davidson College. Chip timing and a smooth start. Great support with plenty of water, Powerade and gel packs. The course was clearly marked with local police doing a great job with Saturday morning traffic. Smooth operations for the relay runners so they could run a good race. Quick results, good post-race food and a place to stay warm at Queens College. The point to point course was great (sorry to see they are changing it). Nice job Charlotte - it was a first class race - just bring warmer weather next time.

"weather terrible, my chip didn't register my time" (about: 2002)

COURSE: 4  ORGANIZATION: 4  FANS: 3

The course was fine, few spectators, the weather was miserable (cold and raining). To top it all off, my chip never beeped in crossing the timing pads, so, my time wasn't registered. The web site has no where to register a complaint. I'm not sure if anyone wrote down the times as the runners crossed the finish line, but my relay partner and I would like credit for running the race.

"Weather sucked; course is changing" (about: 2002)

COURSE: 3  ORGANIZATION: 4  FANS: 4

The weather was absolutely brutal. Ten degrees colder and snow would have been better than the soaking rain and near-freezing conditions. Really, the only thing that would have been worse would have been sleet, because at least the footing was OK in the rain (if a little wet).
This used to be a much bigger marathon, with a different, mostly in-town course that was used for the '96 men's Olympic Trials (yes, Bob Kempainen booted five times in Charlotte, NC), but the Observer moved to sponsorship of an April half-marathon for the last few years before returning to the January marathon this year, and the size really dropped in the interim.
That being said, I thought the organization was good for a relatively small marathon and I was more than impressed at how well-staffed all the water stops remained even in the horrendous weather. One complaint: miles were marked well, but I only counted four clocks on the course (10K, half, 20, 25) -- clocks every other mile seems reasonable.
The Observer reported the day before the race that this is the last year for the Davidson-to-Queens College course. Whether that means that they're going back to the old course remains unclear.

"2 person Relay" (about: 2000)

COURSE: 4  ORGANIZATION: 4  FANS: 3

My running buddy ran this race in January 2001 and loved it...it was sunny and in the 50's, as Charlotte, NC often is in the dead of winter.

I did my second marathon just 2 months ago, so I decided to run this race as a relay and try to set a PR for the half marathon. The weather did stink, but overall, I felt the race was well organized. The volunteers were great, considering. There did, however, seem to be a lack of port-o-johns during the second half of the race. Anyway, despite the COLD, RAIN, and WIND, I managed to set a PR for the half--taking 8 minutes off my previous time. Guess I have the weather and flat course to thank! Don't rule this one out...

"Good point to point course" (about: 2002)

COURSE: 5  ORGANIZATION: 3  FANS: 2

Went to Charlotte specifically to qualify for Boston, and succeeded, despite the weather this year (2002). Did not know what to expect, since no course description or profile was made available, but it turned out to have a fairly flat layout - the Davidson to Queens College route made it an excellent qualifier. The half dozen hills over the last 5 miles were more than balanced out by the amount of downhill that let you build momentum. Understand that race organizers plan on changing the course in future years, however.

Organizers did some things very well - loved the catered pasta dinner, and the warm area at Davidson made available to the runners prior to the race start! This year's tough weather conditions probably threw race directors some curves, but my big beef was the lack of info available to runners prior to race. Did not receive pre-race instruction sheet until less than one hour before race start. Would have been nice to have seen it on website, or at least find it at packet pickup in the bag of goodies. Three or four mile markers did not appear to be up during the race, making pacing a bit more challenging, especially early (did not see mile 1 or 3 markers).

Kudos to the incredible volunteers who hung in, despite temps barely above freezing and the rain - they were incredible! Liked having the relay runners mixed in - more folks to race on the course. Enjoyed a post-race massage due to lack of usual lengthy lines - possibly because word didn't get out. Did not find the famous chili . . . but was very appreciative that organizers had arranged for post-race showers at YMCA, particularly after getting drenched by race's end.

A nice, smaller marathon - would definitely return if I needed a last minute qualifying time again, or, if the new course gets good reviews, as a good mid-winter race in an area that does not have many others from which to choose.

"First Marathon" (about: 2002)

COURSE: 5  ORGANIZATION: 4  FANS: 1

For a first marathon - this was a great one. The fans were very sparse - considering the weather (35 F and rain) it was still a great race. Special thanks to the two girls just past the hospital who yelled out 'go Lee' - It was my first and will not be my last!!
