"GPS showed 26.48 miles? Anyone else notice this??" (about: 2007)
6-10 previous marathons
| 1 Memphis Marathon
COURSE: 4 ORGANIZATION: 5 FANS: 4 Anyone else run this with their GPS? I ran with my Garmin 205, which has always been extremely accurate. From the first mile it was over and by the end it showed that the distance as 26.48 miles. I realize that these things aren't 100% accurate, but It's always been extremely accurate - within 20 or 30 yards - on all of my long runs. I would like to know if anyone else experienced this? Aside from this, it was an excellent marathon. I loved it.

"A top-notch experience" (about: 2007)

COURSE: 4 ORGANIZATION: 5 FANS: 5 After coming to Memphis for the first time in 2006, I came back for another race. This year proved to be an even better experience than last year. Starting with the packet pick up and expo, everything was organized superbly. Arriving in the morning to AutoZone Park allowed me some time to relax and enjoy a warm place to stretch and relax. The great organization continued to the start with the wave start, as corrals were released in 1-minute intervals. I had no problem getting started and didn't have to fight the crowds like some other races I have been in. The course was pretty good overall and police and traffic control were superb. The finish in the ballpark caps a great race. The post-race food and celebration added another feather in the cap of this marathon. I have run over 40 marathons in many different venues and this race has to rank right up there with the best. I do have one problem with this race; it's a shame it is only run once a year. Treat yourself to a great experience - come to Memphis and you will see just how good a race can be. Memphis, I'll see you in 2008!

"A GOOD WINTER MARATHON" (about: 2007)
1 previous marathon
| 1 Memphis Marathon
COURSE: 3 ORGANIZATION: 4 FANS: 4 Had a great time. The course is not tough but seems to be gradually uphill for most of the half marathon. And the portion through the park is pretty rough. Also, ran out of cups for water and energy drink around 9 miles and hot food for half-marathoners at the finish. Except for this, the organization was excellent. Also have to run alongside traffic in many sections of marathon. Very impressed by spectators thanking the runners for running to support St. Jude's. Must have been thanked over a dozen times during the race. Not sure the distance for the 1/2 is correct. The distance between miles 2 and 3 was 1.25 miles and course was 13.3 according to my Garmin. Still a good marathon - I plan to run again. Had a great time in Memphis.

"Excellent marathon! Highly recommend this one." (about: 2007)

COURSE: 5 ORGANIZATION: 5 FANS: 4 This is my first half in Memphis. High points on everything!!! The route was beautiful, and spectators were on every mile. Porta-potty and water every mile. No having to wait in line for this. Volunteers were very friendly and super. Every police officer that we passed was friendly and threw us some loud cheers. The only thing that was not pleasant was the Wynham Hotel. Would not recommend this hotel!

"Great" (about: 2007)

| 1 Memphis Marathon
COURSE: 5 ORGANIZATION: 5 FANS: 5 I ran the half-marathon and I thought it was great. The course was great and provided interesting sights to see along the way. I found a new pair of running shoes for a great deal at the packet pick-up/expo. The weather was perfect - not too cold or warm - and the finish at Autozone Park was fun!

"Good course, very poor organization" (about: 2007)
2 previous marathons
COURSE: 3 ORGANIZATION: 1 FANS: 4 The course was hilly and challenging, but the organization was very poor. I ran the half marathon at a slower pace for my wife's sake (~11:00 min/mile) and by mile 8 they were out of cups for water. By mile 10, they were out of water. When you finish, there was limited water and no food until you forced your way through the crowd out of the field area at AutoZone park. It was more than 10 minutes from finish until we got to the refreshment area because we had to fight crowds. Once we got there, they had soup, hot chocolate and other odd amenities. There was no Gatorade and little fruit/other carbs offered. The lack of access to refreshment during and after the race was unacceptable.

"Running for a cause!" (about: 2007)
4-5 previous marathons
| 1 Memphis Marathon
COURSE: 4 ORGANIZATION: 5 FANS: 5 It sure was nice to run for an important cause. You could easily run a race sponsored by a bank or an insurance company but running for the children made it very special. The rolling hills were not too bad and the local fan support was personal and genuine. Everybody is so friendly! A must-do for marathoners.

"Great Course - Questionable Info!" (about: 2007)
First Marathon
COURSE: 4 ORGANIZATION: 3 FANS: 4 I enjoyed the course and the overall experience. The fans cheering you on were great and this year the weather really enhanced the experience. It was a perfect day from that standpoint. But here we are at 9 a.m. the day after and there are NO results posted online. That is a joke. As a Memphian, while proud, I am not surprised by the amateur-ness of that.

"WOW - quite a memorable experience!!!!" (about: 2007)
First Marathon
COURSE: 5 ORGANIZATION: 5 FANS: 5 While this was my first marathon and I have none other to compare with, I still feel very confident in saying that St. Jude's Marathon was fantastic! It was a great first experience to "marathoning." The support from the spectators truly brought a sense of enrichment and purpose to my run! I was moved to tears by the families that were honoring their children who have passed or currently are battling cancer. The organization of the course, expo, and finish were top notch. Thank you for a great time. I'll never forget it.

"An Incredible Experience" (about: 2007)
2 previous marathons
| 1 Memphis Marathon
COURSE: 5 ORGANIZATION: 5 FANS: 5 I ran the 1/2 marathon and let me say... this was an AMAZING experience. The course was wonderful. There was a live band at every mile. I give the entertainment 5 stars. The crowd was VERY supportive. The scenery was always changing; we ran Beale Street, along the river bank, past the Memphis Zoo, the Pyramid, a lovely upper class shady neighborhood, along the path of a wooded park, across the highway overpass (with many honks of support) and much more. It was AWESOME! I wouldn't change a thing. Everyone is so friendly in this city. I've never met a more welcoming place. Every restaurant server, bartender, volunteer, local citizen, hotel employee, race spectator, stranger on the street, etc... EVERYONE is so polite and friendly. I've never felt so much comfort in a new city... and now I understand "Southern Hospitality." Congratulations, Memphis, and THANK YOU. I'll NEVER forget this for as long as I live. |
