"Perfect marathon" (about: 2007)

| 2 Memphis Marathons
COURSE: 5 ORGANIZATION: 5 FANS: 4 This was my 2nd Memphis Marathon. I missed last year only because my father had surgery the day of the race. It's the little things that make this a great marathon - splits every mile, pacers, well stocked aid stations with enthusiastic volunteers, great weather, no lines at porta-potties, gels at miles 9, 16, 20 (or there about), fair course, and a finish in the stadium that makes you feel like an Olympic athlete. Even if you don't run your best race here, it is hard to beat the support.

"I was disappointed in the marathon." (about: 2007)

| 1 Memphis Marathon
COURSE: 2 ORGANIZATION: 4 FANS: 1 The weather could not have been better for the marathon. I was very excited about running this marathon because I wanted to support a great cause. To my surprise there were not a lot of spectators out supporting the marathoners. The road conditions were awful and traffic was allowed to proceed on the same road as us. I even watched a runner almost get hit by a car at mile 23 because a police officer was not paying attention and let the car go. From mile 13 to 26 was a constant rolling hill. We had to run against traffic for the greater part of the second half. And when you finished in AutoZone Park, you had to climb stairs to the food and beverages. Unfortunately I will not be back in Memphis. I will still support St. Jude's - just not the marathon. One more thing. At mile 24 we had to do this ridiculous u-turn thing. I hope the course is better next year.

"Great race for a great cause" (about: 2007)

COURSE: 4 ORGANIZATION: 5 FANS: 5 This is only my second 1/2 marathon - the first in Chicago this past September. This race was very organized. I loved the water stations every mile, although I didn't need that many since the weather was perfect. I love Chicago but Memphis seemed to welcome the runners a bit more. Great to have a race on Saturday and still be able to enjoy the city instead of rushing back home. I thought the hills were a bit worse than I expected, but even still, I dropped 14 minutes from my time. The pacesetters were really friendly and took time to get to know those running with them. Spectators were great and the entertainment was entertaining! I've already booked my room for next year and plan to be a St. Jude hero next year. Lots of choices at the post-race food tent. Liked finishing in the stadium and the opportunity to sit comfortably to watch the marathon finishers - VERY inspiring! Only drawback was the backlog at the finish. Came to a dead stop due to the congestion at the top of the stairs. Caused everyone to tighten up a bit but this was the only issue I saw all weekend. Highly recommend this one!

"Hilly, with moderate spectator support" (about: 2007)

COURSE: 3 ORGANIZATION: 3 FANS: 3 This was my second marathon, and I am glad I trained for the "rolling hills." The entire race was a rolling hill. I'm from Florida, and I'm thankful to have trained in Clermont, which allowed me to PR. A lot of streets were on an angle, which added to the difficulty of the course. The weather was perfect. Crowd support for the last half of the full was pretty small. There needs to be more bands and spirit groups like Nashville. I heard from a 5-hour finisher that the water stations had run out of cups. Great support from the director. I saw her a few times out there thanking everyone for their support while making sure the cars on the course didn't hit anyone. It was nice to run a race for a great cause.

"How Awesome!!" (about: 2007)
First Marathon
COURSE: 5 ORGANIZATION: 5 FANS: 5 This was my first 1/2 marathon experience. I think the weather was perfect! I loved having people along the sides of the roads cheering for the runners. I also heard a few horn honks of the motorists passing! Thanks to the volunteers passing out water and food during and after the race!! I was amazed to see all the discarded clothing along the side of the road, so thanks to the clean up crew! I will definitely be back for 2008!

"What a Great Experience!" (about: 2007)
First Marathon
COURSE: 5 ORGANIZATION: 5 FANS: 5 This was my first attempt at a half-marathon and all I can say is WOW! The cheering spectators and entertainment along the way was awesome! I am glad that my MP3 player was banned because I would have missed out on a lot of motivation. The cheering from families whose lives have been touched by a child with cancer was very inspiring, as was the little girl I saw outside of Target House. The finish in Auto Zone Park was great but a little crowded. I will definitely put this race on my calendar for years to come!

COURSE: 5 ORGANIZATION: 5 FANS: 5 This was my first half-marathon and what a joy it was. The organization was great and the spectators were even better. I will be back next year. The course was great; not too easy and not too hard. I would recommend to anyone.

"Class act in Memphis!!" (about: 2007)

| 1 Memphis Marathon
COURSE: 5 ORGANIZATION: 5 FANS: 3 Memphis is a must-do in my mind. This is a very well organized event and a very fair, honest course. Enough rolling hills to make it a challenge without overwhelming even a flatlander from NW Ohio. The finish in the ballpark was awesome and the mile or so along the Mississippi was way cool. The pacesetter I ran with was a super encourager and did a great job of keeping the pace even and strong!! Great event!!

"Great Time" (about: 2007)
First Marathon
COURSE: 5 ORGANIZATION: 5 FANS: 5 This whole experience was first-class. I enjoyed the expo, the weather could not have been better, and having the St. Jude patients cheering you on was very special. The course was great and I will come to run here again.

"First Marathon - Beautiful Weekend" (about: 2007)
First Marathon
COURSE: 5 ORGANIZATION: 5 FANS: 5 It was a beautiful weekend. I was there with great friends. We found the people of Memphis to be very friendly. The race was organized and well run. The children's stories were inspiring and sometimes heartbreaking. What a great cause. Crowd support was somewhat sparse but enthusiastic! |
