"Don't let the hills, or the music deter you..." (about: 2003)
COURSE: 5 ORGANIZATION: 4 FANS: 5 This was my first marathon in six years. A friend convinced me to run the CMM with him, his first. Getting back into running condition was much more difficult than I anticipated. Then, I starting to read the CMM reviews: hills, hills, hills. To top everything off, I don't even like country music! What was I doing?? I'm grateful that I didn't back out. The course was challenging, but very doable even for first-timers. The hills were not nearly as difficult as some would have you believe. Excellent fan support, and, very few of the bands actually played Country (at least not when I passed them). We had a great time! My wife ran the 1/2 and found it equally enjoyable. I am once again addicted to running. I would highly recommend the pre-race lecture at the Expo. Very informative and entertaining.

"Great Fans!" (about: 2003)
COURSE: 5 ORGANIZATION: 5 FANS: 5 This was my first Marathon, and a great way to come back to my city of birth to see family and friends. I did most of my training on a treadmill, and flat trails so I was not prepared for the hills, especially the one at 20 miles. The Expo offered pacing teams and I ran with the 5hr group. What a great decision and experience. It's so fun to run with a small group of people with a common time goal. I will always try to run with a pace group .. thanks Nashville Striders! I plan on doing the CMM Marathon every year. Hill traing and speedwork here I come!

"An Exceptional Race " (about: 2003)
COURSE: 5 ORGANIZATION: 5 FANS: 3 Having run 35 marathons, including Boston, NYC, and Big Sur... this race ranks right up there as a great destination event. The course was challenging, but not outrageously hard... some good hills, but a net drop. However, go here to have a great time (as in fun) in a logistically superb event. The roughly 50 bands at stages that seemed to pop up as soon as you got out of ear shot of the last made the event truly fitting the city that hosts the race. The finish line concert was a blast, and the organization from the expo right through to the end is top notch. The big night concert after the event is over was worth the whole run. Nashville is a great city...lots to do and really nice folks. I got asked about the race by more folks than at any other event, even two days later. The whole city seems to really support this event. Best of all, you can't find a more fun place to celebrate the whole thing than in Nashville... whether you like country music or not! Lots of places to eat, drink and have a really fun time. I'd do this one again on without a doubt.

"I Love this Race! Little hills, BIG fan support!" (about: 2003)
COURSE: 4 ORGANIZATION: 4 FANS: 5 This was my second marathon; I ended up qualifying for Boston (yeah!!)even though the pre-race feedback on the hills had me scared. Come to find out, the first half is much more hilly than the second so my splits were negative as a result. Miles 19 to 21 were challenging, but a power gel combined with a big dose of crowd support helped smooth the way. The final miles through the park allowed for a strong finish. This was my second year to come to Nashville for this race (ran the half in 2002) and I will definitely be back.

"Great race/great course, need better mile markers" (about: 2003)
COURSE: 4 ORGANIZATION: 4 FANS: 3 Great race. Kudos. Love the mylar & organization of all of the start & finish participants: very organized & easy. Check in at Expo could run later in the evening (for out of town folks) or be possible some other way (ie, friend pick up, etc.).... improvement of mile markers: I did the half - and it was very hard to figure out how far you had gone,....how much you had left due to the infrequency of the markers & the overcrowding at the stations -Had a great time! Good job!

"Nice event, Challenging Course" (about: 2003)
COURSE: 3 ORGANIZATION: 5 FANS: 5 This was my second marathon, Chicago being the first. The weather was just ideal for running (low 50's, light breeze, cloudy.) The event was very well organized. The corral system helped ease the initial rush. The volunteers were so enthusiastic about their jobs. Fluid stations were at every mile throughout the course. The bands and cheerleaders helped distract the runners from the hilly course. The Finish area had plenty of food and helpful volunteers. The concert was fun. The crowd support was scattered, compared to Chicago, but intense. As for the course, it is challenging and everyone needs to know it before deciding to run the race. The hills were not the steepest but they seemed endless. I still managed to have a 20 minutes PR. My recommendation for anyone who is thinking about it to train on hills regularly or don't bother running it.

"Awesome Half" (about: 2003)
COURSE: 5 ORGANIZATION: 5 FANS: 5 This was my first half marathon. I had a great time, all of the runners were wonderful. I loved the music, cheerleaders, volunteers, and spectators. I felt as if all of the volunteers and staff were really there for us, to cheer us on and aid in any way possible. I love Nashville, and I am very glad to say that my first experience in a 'BIG' race was there. The didn't think the hills were bad, but, being from Maryland, I had to train on hills! Of course I didn't run the full, so I don't know about the hills later... I had a fantastic time, and I'll be back next year to run the full marathon and encourage everyone to head down to Music City to run, too!

"My first marathon....enjoyable race!" (about: 2003)
COURSE: 5 ORGANIZATION: 5 FANS: 5 Being that I am 19 this was my very first marathon so i really had no expectations going into the race...except to try to qualify for Boston. The first half was managable with some of the uphills having rewarding downhills. The people were also very cheerful through that half. The crowd diminished but still remained through the second half. At mile 20 or so there was a HUGE hill...it was very difficult not just because of size, but also mileage point. It challenged you mentally. The powergels at 10 and 19 were great, and the water/gatorade stations were very racer friendly. I did all my training on a treadmill...so i was not ready for the hills, but if you do hill training and get yourself mentally prepared the course well not be TOO difficult. As i found out it was not the ideal race to qualify at. I was 10 min short of my 3:10:00 goal. Overall the fan support could not have been better, and the water/gatorade/powergel stations were also awesome! Good organization and planning. One negative was that once you left the food area at the end of the race you could not re-enter. Overall a very good race and I recommend it to anybody!

"A very good race" (about: 2003)
COURSE: 5 ORGANIZATION: 5 FANS: 4 I ran this marathon today and was very satisfied with my experience. And I didn't think the hills were that bad at all. In fact, I held back a little just because of the hilly reputation of this race. I wish I hadn't and been more agressive. I'll run this race very aggressively next year.

"Good Race" (about: 2002)
COURSE: 4 ORGANIZATION: 4 FANS: 4 The bands along the course were great. This was a good run. The weather was perfect. The hills in the later portion of the course were a little tough. Parking at the expo was a little difficult. I would run this race again. |
